COLUMBUS, Ohio The 39th-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team (13-9, 6-3 Big Ten) was no match for the top-ranked Northwestern Wildcats (21-1, 9-0 Big Ten) today in Evanston, Ill., falling 7-0 in the second-to-last regular season match of the season for the Buckeyes. The loss is the third in Big Ten play this season for the Buckeyes, while Northwestern remains unbeaten in conference.
The Buckeyes were competitive at No. 1 doubles, where Christina Keesey and Angela DiPastina went to a tiebreaker with the No. 19 pairing of Lauren Lui and Georgia Rose. The Wildcats took the tiebreaker and the match, 9-8 (4). Kirsten Flower and Paloma Escobedo, who entered Saturday’s match with Northwestern with an 11-1 mark this spring, fell to Elana Chernyakova and Samantha Murray at No. 3 doubles despite a tough fight, 8-6. Cami Hubbs and Julie Blackmore never found their stroke at No. 2, going down 8-1 to the No, 39 duo of Maria Mosolova and Keri Robinson.
The Wildcats were too much to handle in singles as well, winning each match in straight sets. The No. 1 singles player in the country, Wildcat sophomore Maria Mosolova, overwhelmed Flower at the top spot, winning 6-2, 6-1. The 22nd-ranked Rose was equally effective against Buckeye sophomore Paloma Escobedo, winning 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.
47th-ranked Samantha Murray put the brakes of Keesey’s hot streak in singles, 6-1, 6-2, dealing the Ohio State junior just her third loss this spring. Hubbs was also on the losing end, this time to No. 117 Lauren Lui, who took the match by a score of 6-1, 6-2.
Buckeye seniors DiPastina and Blackmore rounded out the action in Evanston at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, where DiPastina took a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Nazlie Ghazel and Blackmore lost 6-0, 6-2 to Robinson.
The Buckeyes return to the court Sunday at noon EST to take on Wisconsin in Madison in the final Big Ten match of the 2009 season.
