COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team closed out its dual meet season with a 165-77 win over West Virginia Friday at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The win improved Ohio State’s record to 5-4 while West Virginia, from the BIG EAST Conference, drops to 4-11-1.
Ohio State coach Bill Dorenkott, seeking a change of pace, shuffled the events for his swimmers in an effort to see some different competitive matchups.
“I wanted to see some racing tonight,” Dorenkott explained. “I think we were solid in our performances and the win was a fitting way to honor our seniors.”
After the Buckeyes claimed a victory in the 200 medley relay by a WVU disqualification to open the meet, Samantha Cheverton crushed the field in the 1000 freestyle by more than 26 seconds to win in a team season’s-best time of 10:07.20.
Senior Griet Buelens followed with a win in the 200 freestyle (1:51.11), the first of three wins on the night for the senior from Kapelle-Op-Den-Bos, Belgium. Buelens also won the 100 freestyle in 51.76 and the 100 butterfly in 56.60.
Junior Colleen Schweitzer won both breaststroke events. She won the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.90 and took the 200 breaststroke in 2:20.20.
Other individual event winners for the Buckeyes included junior co-captain Jill Lockhart (200 butterfly) and freshman Lisa Narum (200 individual medley).
Diver Kristen Asman won the 1-meter springboard competition with 306.83 points and the 3-meter with 317.48 points.
The meet took place with a backdrop of senior night at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Before the meet the Buckeyes’ three seniors were honored: Courtney Brayman, Buelens and Whitney Hackman.
“This is a tough one,” Howard Brayman, father of Courtney, said before the meet. “There will be some tears shed tonight.”
There were, but those tears were tears of joy! Go Bucks. Always.
The team will now focus its training and rest the next two weeks on the Big Ten Conference championships, which are set for Feb. 19-21 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
