COLUMBUS, Ohio Powered by four-win performances from freshman Catherine Eitel, from Upper Arlington, and sophomore Samantha Cheverton, the Ohio State women’s swimming team defeated Cleveland State, 178-81, Tuesday at the Buseby Natatorium on the CSU campus. The win improved the Buckeyes’ record under new coach Bill Dorenkott to 3-0 on the young season while Cleveland State drops to 4-3.

Eitel and Cheverton were two legs of the Buckeyes’ opening event win the 200 medley relay along with Mary Ann Wiser and Anita Beck and they also were part of the final event of the evening, the 200 freestyle relay that Wiser and Beck were also a part. In between those wins the pair also picked up these individual wins:

  • Cheverton won the 50 backstroke in 27.32;
  • Eitel won the 50 breaststroke in 30.34, leading a 1-2-3-4 sweep that also included Megan Alexander in second, Colleen Schweitzer in third and Whitney Hackman in fourth;
  • Eitel won the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.63 in another top four Ohio State sweep with Schweitzer, Alexander and Hackman finishing second, third and fourth, respectively; and
  • Cheverton won the 50 butterfly in 25.92.

Two other freshman joined Eitel with wins: California natives Natalie Nichols (Claremont) and Lisa Narum (Plesanton) swam to victory in the 500 freestyle and 200 individual medley, respectively. Nichols won in 4:59.13 and Narum won in 2:06.40.

Senior Griet Buelens picked up a pair of wins in the 1000 freestyle (10:27.44) and 100 butterfly (58.43). She led a top three sweep in the 1000 with Erin Fawley and Sarah Ratica touching in second and third, respectively.
 
Ohio State, which took first in 12 of the 14 swimming events, also received winning performances from Meg Noble in the 100 freestyle (54.48) and Haley Mitchell in the 100 backstroke (59.57).

Up next: the Ohio State women’s and men’s swimming and diving teams host the Ohio State Swimming and Diving Invite Dec. 5-7 at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
