COLUMBUS, Ohio Paige Maxwell and Lauren Steuer scored goals in the first and second halves, respectively, and Ohio State defeated Kent State, 2-0, in an exhibition soccer game Saturday at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
Maxwell, the team’s leading goal scorer and points scorer last fall as a freshman with eight goals, scored in the 34th minute off a free kick assist from Colleen Brady. Steuer scored off a cross with the assist to Ashley Bowyer in the 64th minute.
“Both teams played physical soccer and both played well,” Ohio State coach Lori Walker said. “I was very impressed with Kent State, and at the same time the coaches really liked what we saw with Ohio State. We stayed wide and it was a good start for us.”
Courtney Jenkins was chosen by her teammates as the player of the game.
“Courtney played a clean, organized game in the middle of the field,” Walker said. “She won a ton of head balls as well.”
Steuer was playing in her first game action exhibition or regular season as a midfielder and she was impressive in her new surroundings, Walker said.
“Lauren was our left midfielder and she is a good fit there,” Walker said. “She is a natural left-footer. She’s physically fit. She has good pace on the ball and she played a very clean game.”
The Buckeyes don’t have another spring exhibition game until April 5 when they take on Ohio University at 2 p.m. on the OSU Upper Practice Field.
