COLUMBUS, Ohio Less than a week after head coach Tom Ryan earned coach of the year honors, Ohio State wrestling assistant coach Lou Rosselli garnered the same laurel Monday, just in a different capacity. Rosselli was named the 2007 Terry McCann Award Winner (USA Wrestling Freestyle Coach of the Year) by USA Wrestling.

“I am honored to be selected for this prestigious award,” Rosselli said. “Tommy (Rowlands) and Joe (Heskett) deserve a major portion of this award because they did the work. I am glad I could help them achieve some of their goals.”

As the 2007 U.S. Freestyle World Team Coach at the World Wrestling Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, Sept. 17-23, Rosselli helped lead the U.S. squad to a fourth-place finish. Heskett, current Ohio State assistant coach and Rowlands, a volunteer assistant, were members of the 2007 U.S. World Team roster that was coached by Rosselli. It was during the World Wrestling Championships that Heskett and Rowlands qualified their respective weight classes for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

Rosselli recently was honored by the Edinboro University of Pennsylvania Alumni Association at the Distinguished Alumni Awards ceremony with the Young Alumni Award. He also was one of five finalists for a spot as a volunteer freestyle coach for the U.S. Team that will travel to Beijing.

Rosselli splits his time as a club coach with the New York Athletic Club, one of the world’s most successful wrestling clubs. At the 2007 U.S. National Championships, the NYAC finished second among Division I competitors.

In 2006, serving in the same coaching role as in 2007, Rosselli guided the freestyle team to a third-place finish in Guangzhou, China. That squad featured four individual medalists.

Rosselli and the Buckeyes are coming off a record-breaking season in 2007-08. With two individual national champions in J Jaggers (141) and Mike Pucillo (184), Ohio State was the runner-up at the 2008 NCAA Championships, the best finish in program history.
