COLUMBUS, Ohio For the second-consecutive year, Tom Ryan, Ohio State wrestling head coach, was named Rev Coach of the Year, the online publication RevWrestling.com announced Monday. Ryan becomes the only two-time recipient. This honor is presented each year to the nation’s top coach across all divisions of college wrestling and is determined in balloting by RevWrestling.com writers and executives.

It was a close ballot, with Ryan and Iowa head coach Tom Brands each receiving 52 votes. Ryan won based on first-place votes. The Buckeye head coach earned four first-place ballots vs. two for Brands.

It is the second coach of the year laurel for Ryan following the Buckeyes’ impressive run at the NCAA championships two weeks ago as he also was named NCAA national coach of the year.

“With an uncanny ability to dissect technique, Ryan is able to use Ohio State’s grueling schedule to his advantage,” Tom Franck, staff writer at RevWrestling.com, said. “For the second straight year, he’s been able to have his wrestlers not only make adjustments from the regular season, but employ supreme tactics on the biggest stage.”

Ryan and the Buckeyes finished as NCAA runners-up for the second-consecutive year, only 4.5 points behind Iowa. During the regular season, Ryan, who is in his third year with the Scarlet and Gray, led Ohio State to a 16-2 record, including a 7-1 mark in the Big Ten Conference. The Buckeyes won seven league matches for the first time since 1991-92.

At the 2009 NCAA Championships, Ryan guided three Buckeyes to the finals, including J Jaggers, who won his second-straight national title at 141 pounds. Jaggers joined elite company, becoming only the third Buckeye to have two national championships to his credit.

Ryan also reached the 150-win plateau following Ohio State’s 26-13 victory over Illinois Feb. 15. In 14 seasons as a head coach, Ryan has compiled a 152-96-1 record (.610). Prior to arriving on the Ohio State campus, Ryan coached at Hofstra for 11 seasons and amassed a 109-83-1 record. So far, as the Buckeye head coach, Ryan is 43-13 (.768).
