Pucillo moves to 10-0 on the season with technical fall at 184

COLUMBUS, Ohio The fifth-ranked Ohio State wrestling team built a 16-6 lead after six matches Sunday but dropped the final four bouts in an 18-16 defeat to No. 10 Minnesota before a crowd of 1,273 in Value City Arena. The Buckeyes, who had snapped a 13-dual losing streak to the Golden Gophers with a 25-12 victory at the 2009 National Duals in January, could not take another from the conference rival and move to 10-2 (1-1 Big Ten) on the season.

“We were outworked today,” Tom Ryan, third-year Ohio State head coach, said. “This Buckeye team didn’t have much fight in them and this is the outcome.”

Lance Palmer, Colt Sponseller, Dave Rella and Mike Pucillo move to 2-0 in the Big Ten with wins vs. Indiana and Minnesota this weekend.

The meet started with a rematch of Ohio State’s 12th-ranked J Jaggers and Minnesota’s fifth-ranked Jayson Ness. The two faced each other at the 2009 National Duals Jan. 11 in Cedar Falls, Iowa with Jaggers upsetting Thorn, 7-2. The Northfield, Ohio, native fought hard but lost a 6-4 overtime decision to the Gopher Sunday. Palmer put three points on the scoreboard for the Buckeyes to tie the match, downing Joe Grygelko at 149. The Columbia Station, Ohio, native posted three takedowns and an escape in his 7-0 decision.

The Gophers recaptured the lead, 6-3, after three weight classes when freshman Sean Nemec fell to No. 14 Tyler Safratowich, 8-5, at 157.

With a 6-3 lead heading into the final period, Sponseller, ranked second in the nation, tallied his second win of the weekend, recording a 12-4 major decision at 165 over No. 16 Scott Glasser. Sponseller’s win put Ohio State in the lead for the first time with the score standing at 7-6. Sponseller won the deciding match vs. Indiana Friday night to secure Ohio State’s 18-16 victory and owns a 23-3 record this season.

Wrestling at 174, Rella, a junior from Akron, Ohio, held a 6-3 advantage over Minnesota’s Matt Everson after two periods of action. With three takedowns and a two-point near fall, Rella won a 13-5 major decision to continue the Buckeyes’ momentum. Ohio State entered the sixth match of the day with an 11-6 lead.

Entering the 184 match with a perfect 9-0 ledger, the Scarlet and Gray’s second-ranked Pucillo jumped ahead in the first period with a 9-1 advantage over Sonny Yohn of Minnesota at 184 pounds. In just one period, the Cuyahoga, Ohio, native scored three takedowns, a two-point near fall and three-point near fall. He continued his dominance, posting a second three-point near fall early in the second period. Adding two more takedowns, Pucillo lead Yohn, 18-4, heading into the final period. Pucillo posted his final takedown 17 seconds into the third to earn a 21-4 technical fall over Yohn and moved to 10-0 on the year. The junior pinned the Hoosiers’ Eric Cameron in 2:41 Friday night in St. John Arena to finish the weekend 2-0 in Big Ten action.

“Right down the line it went opposite of how we wanted,” Pucillo said. “Minnesota was more prepared than we were and it was frustrating to watch. Last time, I pinned Yohn and scored six points, this time I only got five. It’s a few points here and there that make a difference.”

The Buckeyes owned a 16-6 advantage with freshman Cody Gardner up against the Gophers’ Gordon Bierschenk. Bierschenk posted a 5-2 win for Minnesota at 197 to pull the teams within seven points with Ohio State up, 16-9.

The heavyweight division featured a battle between No. 17 Corey Morrison of the Scarlet and Gray and No. 18 Ben Berhow of the Maroon and Gold. After a tightly contested first period, Morrison scored an escape in the second, entering the final period with a 1-0 lead. Minnesota’s Berhow posted an escape and followed with a takedown to move ahead, 3-2. A Berhow takedown with one minute left would end the match, giving the Gopher a 5-2 decision. Morrison drops to 15-10 on the year. After eight weight classes, the score stood at 16-12 with Ohio State in the lead.

At 125, Buckeye Nikko Triggas had a tough match in front of him, grappling with Zach Sanders, who owned a 27-2 record entering the dual and ranked fifth in the national polls. The score was close after the first period of wrestling with Sanders up, 3-2, over Triggas. But in the second and third, Sanders pulled in front a posted a 13-7 decision. Heading into the final bout of the day, Ohio State held a one-point margin, 16-15, with the deciding match featuring Buckeye and No. 1-ranked Reece Humphrey vs. No. 5 Jayson Ness at 133.

Humphrey and Ness met in January at the National Duals in Iowa with Humphrey winning a 5-4 decision. Sunday in Value City Arena, Ness won 5-0, delivering Humphrey his first loss of the year.

Ohio State is back in action next week travelling to State College, Pa., for a 7 p.m. dual against Penn State Friday before returning to Columbus for a matchup vs. Purdue at 5 p.m. Sunday in St. John Arena.
