MADISON, Wisc. – Ohio State (9-5 overall, 3-4 Big Ten), with four freshmen starters upset No. 24 Wisconsin (11-6, 4-3) Friday night in front of 2,405 fans. OSU’s Rosie Snow scored a team-high 21 kills for the Buckeyes with Jen Flynn adding 18 and Suzie Stiling 10. Wisconsin’s Sherisa Livingston had a match-high 22 kills for the Badgers with Jenny Maastricht adding 15, Kelly Kennedy 14 and Allyson Ross 11.

The Buckeyes had five of the six starters record double-figure digs in the match, with three players, Katie Virtue (12), Jen Flynn (17) and Sue Calligaris (15) setting career-highs and Shelly Draeger tying her career-high of 11 digs. Flynn also had a career-high 18 kills, while Suzie Stiling set career-highs of eight block assists and nine total blocks. Snow’s 21 kills is her fourth match of 20 or more kills this season and extends her streak of 35 matches with double-figure kills.

Wisconsin opened up a 3-0 lead in game one with Ohio State coming back to go up 10-5. Six OSU errors gave Wisconsin the lead at 11-10. The game was tied at 11 and 12 before two OSU errors put the Badgers at game point (14-12). Two Badger errors tied the game at 14. A Kelly Kennedy kill put Wisconsin at game point at 15-4. The teams traded sideouts before a Kennedy and Morgan Shields block ended the game at 16-14. Wisconsin hit .156 for the game to .129 for Ohio State.

The Badgers had a 3-1 lead in game two before a Badger error, a Sue Calligaris kill, an ace by Suzie Stiling and a kill by Katie Virtue put Ohio State up 5-3. The Buckeyes maintained the lead and after a Kelly Kennedy kill closed the gap to 12-9, a Jen Flynn kill and two Badger errors ended the game at 15-9. The Buckeyes hit .259 for the game to .189 for Wisconsin.

Wisconsin controlled game three after OSU held a 2-1 lead. Wisconsin scored six consecutive points off three OSU errors, an ace serve by Jamie Gardner and two blocks by Kelly Kennedy and Jenny Maastricht to take a 7-2 lead. The Buckeyes trailed 11-3 before Wisconsin put together four consecutive points to finish the game at 15-3 and take a 2-1 lead in the match. Wisconsin was near perfect in hitting .483 with only two errors, while OSU hit .033. The Badgers had a 3-1 vanish as OSU scored six consecutive points off two Shelly Draeger ace serves, a block by Suzie Stiling and Katie Virtue and three UW errors. After an OSU error closed the score to 7-4, the Buckeyes scored points off kills by Jen Flynn and Shelly Draeger, a ace by Rosie Snow and a Wisconsin error to take an 11-4 lead. An ace serve by Allyson Ross and two OSU errors cut the lead to 11-7, but a Snow kill and Wisconsin errors set game point at 14-7. Wisconsin closed the lead to 14-12, but a Badger error finished the game at 15-12 sending the match to the rally scoring fifth game. Ohio State hit .118 for the game to .100 for Wisconsin.

Game five saw Wisconsin take a 4-1 lead. OSU close the gap with a Suzie Stiling kill (4-2) but Sherisa Livingston countered with a kill to make it 5-2. Kills by Katie Virtue and Jen Flynn cut the Wisconsin lead to 5-4. The score was tied at six, seven, eight and nine and at 10 when OSU’s Suzie Stiling and Jen Flynn recorded a block to tie the score. A block by Anne Botica and Suzie Stiling gave OSU a 11-10 lead and Jen Flynn’s ace serve put the lead at 12-10. A Wisconsin error and OSU blocks by Stiling and Rosie Snow and Stiling and Anne Botica ended the game at 15-10 giving the Buckeyes a 3-2 win. Ohio State hit .222 in the game to .000 for Wisconsin.

Match statistics show Wisconsin having the edge in kills (74-70), hitting percentage (.185-.157) and blocks (15-12). The Buckeyes outdug the Badgers, 81 to 70 and had a nine to five advantage in ace serves. OSU’s 81 digs is a team season high.

Ohio State continues on the road for a Saturday match at Purdue (10-6, 2-5), a 1-15, 5-15, 4-15 loser to No. 1 Penn State (17-1, 7-0) Friday night.
