EVANSTON, Ill. – Ohio State (8-5 overall, 2-4 Big Ten) behind 11 kills by Rosie Snow and Suzie Stiling defeated Northwestern (2-14, 0-6), 15-6, 15-5, 15-8 Saturday night in Welsh-Ryan Arena in front of 387 fans. Wildcat Carmen Burbach had a team-high five kills with three other Northwestern players having four each.
After trailing 1-0 in game one, Ohio State scored the next six points to take a 6-1 lead. The Buckeyes continued to expand the lead thanks to eight Northwestern errors with a Shelly Draeger kill finishing the game at 15-6. OSU hit .258 for the game to .094 for Northwestern.
OSU fell behind 3-0 in game two and saw Northwestern take a 4-1 lead off an OSU error. Three Northwestern errors and a kill by Suzie Stiling tied the game at five. OSU expanded the lead to 11-5 off three Wildcat errors, a kill by Dana Stearns and ace serves by Jen Flynn and Stiling. An NU attack error, an ace serve by Stearns and a kill by Stiling put OSU at 14-5 serving game point. A Wildcat ball handling error finished the game at 15-5. The Buckeyes hit .375 in the game to .065 for Northwestern.
Game three saw Northwestern take a 1-0 lead off an attack error by the Buckeyes, but an NU error tied the game at one. OSU took a 3-2 lead off two kills by Jen Flynn and a NU attack error, but an OSU error tied the game at three and a kill by NU’s Carmen Burbach put Northwestern up 4-3. A Wildcat error tied the game at four with OSU scoring the next five consecutive points on two kills by Rosie Snow, two Wildcat errors and an ace serve by Suzie Stiling. Two Wildcat errors and an ace serve by Rosie Snow pushed the OSU lead to 12-4. Northwestern scored the next four points on three OSU errors and a kill by Kitty Owen to cut OSU’s lead to 12-8. OSU closed out the match with a kill by Shelly Draeger for a 15-8 game three win. Ohio State hit .152 in the game to .080 for Northwestern.
Team statistics had Ohio State hitting .260 for the match to .080 for Northwestern. OSU outserved the Wildcats seven to none, highlighted by three aces by Jen Flynn and two by Suzie Stiling. The Buckeyes had a 35 to 27 advantage in digs with OSU’s Flynn and NU’s Carmen Burbach each picking up 10 in the match. Ohio State collected nine blocks to six for Northwestern with OSU’s Stiling have a match-high four on one solo and three assists and Flynn producing two solo and one assist. NU’s Leah Ackerman had a team-high three assist blocks for Northwestern. Ohio State completes two weeks on the road next week with a Friday match at Wisconsin and faces Purdue on Saturday.
