COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (1-0 overall) women’s volleyball team opened the 2004 season with a 3-0 (30-17, 30-16, 30-15) victory at home against Dayton (0-1) Wednesday night in St. John Arena. OSU’s Stacey Gordon (Sr., Oshawa, Ontario) scored a match-high 19.5 points for the Buckeyes with Ami Stevens (Fr., Centerburg, Ohio) adding 15. Gordon had a match-high 16 kills (.500) and added two solo and three assist blocks. Stevens contributed 11 kills, three ace serve and two assist blocks. Flyer Faye Barhorst (So., Fort Loramie, Ohio) had a team-high 9.5 points for Dayton with Christy Utnage (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind.) adding 7.5. Barhorst had six kill with one solo and five assist blocks while Utnage added a team-high seven kills and an assist block. Ohio State opened game one with a 7-1 lead. At 9-6, three OSU errors tied the game at nine. A Gordon kill and two by Stevens returned the lead to OSU at 12-10. At 13-10, a Dayton kill by Utnage and an OSU error cut the Buckeye lead to one at 13-12. Ohio State scored the next six points to open a 19-12 lead. The Buckeyes closed out game one with a Danielle Meyer (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) kill, winning 30-17. A Buckeye serving error opened game two putting Dayton ahead, 1-0. With Ohio State leading, 4-3, two Gordon kills gave OSU a 6-3 lead. Dayton closed to within one at 8-7 with a Nicole Schott (Jr., Rosecoe, Ill.) kill. OSU followed with a six-point run to take a 14-7 lead. The Buckeyes expanded the lead to win the game, 30-16, on a kill by Amanda Miller (Jr., Littleton, Colo.). Ohio State opened a 7-1 lead in game three. At 17-11, Ohio State outscored Dayton, 11-2, to lead 28-13. With her four ace serve of the match, a career high, Briana McCarthy (So., Beaver Dam, Wis.) closed out the game at 30-15. For the match, Ohio State hit .333 to Dayton’s .086. The Buckeyes had a 47-24 margin in kills. OSU served up 14 ace serves in the match while giving up seven service errors. The Flyers did not score an ace in the match and had eight service errors. Ohio State had a 33-22 margin in digs with Anna Tengnas (So., Torsaberga, Sweden) recording a match-high nine. At the net, Ohio State had a 9-6 advantage in team blocks. Dayton’s Barhorst had a match-high six blocks with one solo and five assists. OSU’s Marisa Main (So., Louisville, Ky.) had 38 assists in the match while Dayton’s Schott recorded 15. Ohio State now travels to the Hampton Inn/Kaepa Temple Classic in Philadelphia, Pa. OSU will face host Temple Friday, Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. The Buckeyes will then play North Carolina (9:30 a.m.) and Western Michigan (4 p.m.) Saturday.
