COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (9-8,3-5 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team, trailing 2-1 in games to Illinois (9-8, 3-5), rallied to a 3-2 (30-24, 24-30, 27-30, 30-16, 15-6) victory Saturday night in Huff Hall. OSU’s Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario) scored a match-high 24 kills for the Buckeyes and tied her career-high with 21 digs. Also in double-figure kills for Ohio State were Suzie Stiling (Sr., Glenview, Ill.) with 18, Shelly Draeger (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) with 16 and Brie Hagerty (Fr., Defiance, Ohio) with 10. Leading the Illini were Lisa Argabright (Sr., Louisville, Ky.) with 14 kills and Melissa Vandrey (Jr., Chicago, Ill.) with 12.

Illinois opened game one with a 2-0 lead and built a 10-1 lead over the Buckeyes. Trailing 17-10, a Draeger kill, a block by Stephanie Higgins (Fr., Biggsville, Ill.) and Gordon, an ace serve by Heather Whalen (Jr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) and a Illinois error cut the lead to 17-14. A Buckeye error made it 18-14. Ohio State scored the next seven points to take a 21-18 lead. The Buckeye run included three kills by Gordon, two by Draeger, one from Stiling and an Illinois error. Rachel VanMeter (Fr., Spartanburg, S.C.) stopped the run with a kill at 21-19. Kills by Draeger and VanMeter moved the score to 22-20. A Stiling kill and a Gordon ace serve made it 24-20. At 27-23, a Gordon kill and a block by Draeger and Higgins set game point at 29-23. Sue Webber’s (Sr., Herscher, Ill.) kill stopped the game point at 29-24. Draeger’s seventh kill of the game closed it out at 30-24. Ohio State hit .261 for the game to .095 for the Illini. In a close game two that saw 11 ties, Illinois broke the final tie at 24 with six straight points for a 30-24 win to tie the match at one game each. Two VanMeter kills, a solo block by Argabright and three Buckeye errors made up the final run. Illinois hit .364 for the game to .209 for Ohio State

From a four-all tie in game three, Illinois built a five-point lead at 14-9 and 19-14. OSU cut the lead to one at 25-24 with a Gordon ace serve and tied the game at 25 with an Illinois error. A second Illini error gave the Buckeyes a 26-25 lead. Argabright’s kill tied the game at 26. An Argabright-Betsy Eiserman (Sr., Lake Bluff, Ill.) block made it 27-26, Illinois. A Buckeye error and a Jessica Belter (So., St. Peters, Mo.) ace serve set game point at 29-26 for the Illini. Stiling held off the game point with a kill but an Argabright kill closed out the game at 30-27, giving Illinois a 2-1 lead in the match. For the game, Ohio State hit .119 to .103 for the Illini.

Ohio State opened game four with a Higgins kill and two from Stiling for a 3-0 lead. Leading 5-3, the Buckeyes with an Illinois error, two Stiling kills and one from Hagerty and a Stiling-Hagerty block opened a 10-3 Ohio State lead. The Buckeyes expanded the lead to 10 at 26-16 and with two Stiling kills and single kills from Draeger and Gordon won the game 30-16 to tie the match at two games each. The Buckeyes hit .439 for the game, while holding the Illini to .047.

OSU’s Higgins opened game five with a kill and took a 2-0 lead with a Gordon kill. VanMeter countered with a kill at 2-1. Two Illini and one Buckeye error moved the score to 4-2. A Gordon kill and a Buckeye service error made it 5-3. An error by both team moved the score to 6-4. Hagerty made it 7-4 with a kill but Argabright countered with a kill at 7-5. OSU’s Katie Virtue (Sr., St. Charles, Ill.) made it 8-5 with a kill, but Argabright responded with a kill at 8-6. The Buckeyes scored the next seven points to win the game, 15-6 and take the match, 3-2. The run began with an Illinois error (9-6). A kill by Draeger made it 10-6 as Illinois called time out. An Illini error and an ace serve by Whalen made it 12-6 as Illinois again called time out. Gordon connected with a kill to made it 13-6. Another Whalen ace serve set match point at 14-6 and a block by Draeger and Higgins ended the game at 15-6. Ohio State hit .333 for the game to -.143 for Illinois.

Ohio State hit .262 for the game to .117 for Illinois. The Buckeyes had a 79-48 advantage in kills while Illinois out served Ohio State, 11-7. The Illini’s Webber had a match-high seven aces with Belter adding three. OSU’s Whalen contributed a team-high three aces. The Buckeyes gave up 15 service errors to nine for the Illini. Ohio State produced a season-high 82 digs in the match to 62 for Illinois. OSU’s Gordon recorded a career-tying 21 digs while teammate Whalen had a career-high 18. Webber had a team-high 15 for the Illini. At the net, Illinois had a 13-11.5 advantage in blocks. Argabright recorded a match-high seven blocks with two solos and five assists. Ohio State had a team-high six assist blocks from Higgins. At setter for Ohio State, Viture recorded a match-high 64 assists that equaled her season high Friday night at Purdue. For Illinois, Eiserman had 42 assists.

Ohio State returns home next weekend to face eighth-ranked Minnesota (20-3, 7-1) at 7 p.m., Fri., Oct. 25 and then close out the first half of the Big Ten season against Iowa (8-10, 2-6) at 1 p.m., Sun., Oct. 27.

Katie Virtue had 64 assists against Illinois to equal her season high set Friday night at Purdue.

Suzie Stiling had a season-high 18 kills at Illinois. Her previous best this season was 16 at Penn State. Stiling’s seven assist blocks on the weekend gives her 325 for her career and moved her to fourth on the OSU career assist blocks list. She passed Jenny Jackson (1992-95) with 322.

Stacey Gordon recorded a season-high 21 digs at Illinois. That equaled her career high set against Penn State in 2001.

Stacey Gordon, with 24 kills at Illinois extended her consecutive matches with double-figure kills to 33. She has had double-figure kills in 46 of 48 matches in her career and has 21 matches with 20 or more kills. Gordon has had 21 or more kills in eight of her last nine matches (the other, 19). Gordon produced 45 kills on the weekend and now has 909 for her career. She moved to 18th on the OSU career-kills list passing Carrie Leonard (1991-94) with 902 and Vicki Wright (1983-86) with 895.

Brie Hagerty, with 10-kills against Illinois equaled her career high set Friday at Purdue. Hagerty also recorded a career-high five assist blocks against the Illini.

Shelly Draeger recorded a career-high nine assists at Illinois. Her previous best was eight at Penn State earlier this season. Draeger with 36 kills on the weekend now has 1,055 in her career and has moved to 13th on the OSU career kills list, passing Sherri Helman (1993-96) with 1,049. Her five assist blocks for the weekend give her 171 in her career and moved her to 18th on the OSU career assist blocks list. She passed Shellye Sills (1997-99) with 168. With one solo block, Draeger’s six total blocks gives her 184 (13-171) for her career and moved her to 19th on the OSU career list. She passed Shellye Sills (1997-99) with 181 (13-168) and Andrea Pankova (1995-97) with 178 (36-142).
