COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (10-11 overall, 4-9 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team, behind career-highs of 41 kills and 23 digs by Stacey Gordon (Jr., Oshawa, Ontario), defeated Purdue (12-12, 5-8), 3-1 (30-23, 25-30, 30-22, 30-23) Friday night. She hit a season-high .473 with 74 attempts and six errors. Gordon’s 41 kills gives her 1,792 career-kills leaving her needing 11 kills to become OSU’s all-time career kills leader, currently held by Holly O’Leary (1987-90) with 1,802. Buckeye Amanda Miller (So., Littleton, Colo.) added 18 kills (.556) for Ohio State. For Purdue, Kim McConaha scored a team-high 19 kills with Marie Franke adding 14 and Leah Wischmeier, 10.

From a five-all tied in game one, a Purdue error and a block by Jackie Schardt (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Heather Whalen (Sr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) gave OSU a 7-5 lead. At 8-7, OSU scored eight consecutive points to open a 16-7 lead. At 28-23, Gordon closed out the game with two kills for a 30-23 win. Ohio State hit .324 in the game to .175 for Purdue.

Game two had the Buckeyes up three points at 9-6. Five Buckeye errors and a kill by Kim Cappa put the Boilermakers ahead, 12-9. Down 13-10, a solo block by Briana McCarthy (Fr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) and a Purdue error cut the lead to one at 13-12. Purdue responded with four straight points to take a 17-12 lead. The Boilermakers held the lead and won the game, 30-25. Purdue hit .111 for the game to OSU’s .000.

Back-to-back ace serves by Anna Tengnas (Fr., Hyltebruk, Sweden) opened game three with a 2-0 lead. At 9-7, a Whalen kill and a block by McCarthy and D’wan Shackleford (Sr., Newark, Ohio) to go up 11-7. Kills by Franke and McConaha cut the lead to 11-9. A five-point run with two kills from Gordon, one from Miller and an ace serve from Tengnas opened a 15-9 Buckeye lead. Leading 27-22, a Gordon kill followed by a McCarthy ace serve set game point and Gordon closed out the game with a kill at 30-22. Ohio State hit .425 for the game to Purdue’s .279. Game four saw OSU’s Gordon account for 17 points with a season-game-high 17 kills. Tied at three-all, a Purdue error and kills by Miller and Gordon opened a 6-3 Buckeye lead. Purdue rallied and tied the game at seven with a McConaha kill. Three consecutive Gordon kill made the lead, 10-7, Buckeyes. At 20-17, a kill by Katie Dobson and an ace serve by Renata Dargan cut the OSU lead to one at 20-19. With OSU leading 24-21, a Purdue error and five Gordon kills closed out the game at 30-23. The Buckeyes hit .611 for the game to .342 for Purdue.

For the match, Ohio State hit .331 to Purdue’s .229. The Buckeyes had 75 kills to 60 for the Boilermakers. OSU recorded eight ace serve to four for Purdue with OSU’s Tengnas recording a match-high four aces. Defensively, Ohio State had a 64-36 margin in digs with OSU’s Gordon recording a match/career-high of 23 with Whalen adding 12. At the net, Ohio State had an eight to four margin in team blocks. Individually OSU’s Shackleford had a match-high five assist blocks, sharing match-high honors with Buckeye setter McCarthy with two solos and three assists. McCarthy contributed a match-high 60 assists to 46 for Purdue’s Dargan.

OSU will play at Indiana at 7 p.m. Saturday.
