WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Ohio State (9-6 overall, 3-5 Big Ten) came up short against Purdue (11-6, 3-5) Saturday night losing 8-15, 8-15, 15-9, 10-15 at the Intercollegiate Athletic Facility. Both squads had five players with double-figure kills in the match. Aneska Arosarena of Purdue had a match-high 27 kills with Sarah Emke and Julie Doud recording 15 each. OSU’s Rosie Snow scored a team-high 18 kills, her 36th consecutive double-figure kill match, with Suzie Stiling and Shelly Draeger collecting 16 each.

Ohio State opened game one with a 3-0 lead, but Purdue scored five straight points to go up 5-3. Purdue led 11-5 but three Boilermaker errors cut the lead to 11-8. Two OSU errors and kills by Aneska Arosarena and Taryn Catlin finished the game at 15-8. Purdue hit .229 for the game to .000 for Ohio State.

The Buckeyes started the game with a 2-0 lead. At 2-1, Three OSU errors and a Purdue error tied the game at three. Ohio State held a 6-4 lead, but a kill by Julie Doud and an OSU error tied the game at six and a Connie Paul ace put Purdue up 7-6. Purdue built up a 12-6 lead. Ohio State made it 12-7 on a Rosie Snow ace serve, but kills by Aneska Arosarena and Connie Paul set game point (14-7) for Purdue. OSU sided out and a Purdue error made it 14-8. After OSU stopped another game point, Purdue’s Maegan Petersen ended the game with a kill for a 15-8 win. The Boilermakers hit .472 for the game to .255 for Ohio State.

OSU quickly built up an 8-0 lead in game three. The Buckeyes led 12-4 before Purdue picked up five points to cut the lead to 12-9. A Purdue error put OSU up 13-9 and a Rosie Snow ace made it game point at 14-9. Purdue held off two game points before a Boilermaker error ended the game at 15-9. Ohio State hit .513 for the game to .359 for Purdue.

Purdue fell behind 0-2 in game four, but tied the score at three, five and seven. The Boilermakers took an 8-7 lead on a kill by Julie Doud, but OSU tied the game at eight on a Purdue error. Purdue went up 10-8 on a kill by Sarah Emke and an OSU error. Emke’s ace serve put Purdue up 11-8, but a kill by OSU’s Suzie Stiling cut the lead to 11-9. Kills by Taryn Catlin and Emke gave Purdue a 13-9 lead. A Purdue error made the score 13-10 in favor of the Boilermakers. After a side out, Purdue’s Emke and Julie Doud blocked for point to set match point and a kill by Doud ended the game at 15-10. Purdue hit .447 for the game to .395 for Ohio State.

Purdue outhit Ohio State .376 to .276 in the match and had a 85 to 74 advantage in kills. The Boilermakers outblocked the Buckeyes twelve to five and had the advantage in digs, 55 to 53 and aces six to five.

OSU’s Rosie Snow had a match-high four ace serves, tying her career high. Buckeye freshmen Suzie Stiling and Sue Calligaris set career highs for kills in the match. Stiling had 16 and Calligaris 10 while Stiling hit .483 in the match for a career-high.

Ohio State begins a four-match homestand next week with Minnesota (16-4, 7-1) coming to town on Friday and Iowa (4-11, 3-5) Saturday.
