COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio – The Ohio State (10-15 overall, 4-13 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (17-30, 30-27, 30-21, 30-25) decision to 15th-ranked Penn State (25-4, 14-3) Wednesday night in St. John Arena. OSU’s Stacey Gordon (Jr., Oshawa, Ontario) fired a match-high 30 kills while teammate Amanda Miller (So., Littleton, Colo.) contributed a career-high 21 kills for the Buckeyes. PSU’s Cara Smith had a team-high 19 kills for the Nittany Lions with Erin Iceman adding 16 and Ashley Pederson, 14.

Ohio State opened an 11-3 lead in game one, taking the lead to 10 at 20-10. OSU expanded the lead, winning on a Gordon kill at 30-17. For the game, Ohio State hit .395 to .105 for Penn State.

Penn State came out strong in game two, building a 20-10 lead. At 25-15, Penn State, the Buckeyes cut the margin to 25-18 with three PSU errors. At 27-20, two Penn State errors and a D’wan Shackleford (Sr., Newark, Ohio) kill cut the margin to 27-23. Smith’s kill made it 28-23 but kills by Miller and Gordon, a solo block by Briana McCarthy (Fr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) and a Nittany Lion error cut the lead to one at 28-27. A Buckeye error and an Iceman, Cassy Salyer and Pederson block ended the game at 30-27. Penn State hit .130 for the game to .073 for Ohio State.

Penn State broke a five-all tie, taking an 11-7 lead in game three. OSU closed to within one at 13-12 but could not get the lead. At 14-13, a Pederson kill and an OSU error opened the lead to 16-13. Penn State held the lead, winning the game, 30-21. Penn State hit .255 for the game to .167 for Ohio State. Game four remained close with the last tie at 18. A Smith kill and a block by Syndie Nadeau put Penn State ahead, 20-18. Penn State held a 23-22 lead when a four-point Nittany Lion run made it, 27-22. Iceman’s kill ended the match at 30-25. The Nittany Lions hit .295 for the game to .241 for OSU.

For the match, Ohio State out hit Penn State, .215 to .202. The Buckeyes had a 67-60 advantage in kills and out served the Nittany Lions, 3-2. Each squad gave up nine service errors. The Buckeye enjoyed a 91-73 margin in digs with OSU’s Anna Tengnas (Fr., Hyltebruk, Sweden) recording a career-high 22. At the net, Penn State enjoyed a 14.5 to 8 margin in team blocks. PSU’s Salyer had a match-high eight assist blocks while OSU’s McCarthy had a team-high six including a career-high four solo blocks. Penn State’s Sam Tortorello recorded a match-high 54 assists with McCarthy collecting 50.

Ohio State closes out the home schedule at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21 when they host Wisconsin (18-9, 10-6).
