COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (9-11 overall, 3-9 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team lost 3-1 (21-30, 30-20, 34-32, 30-26) to Northwestern (14-10, 5-7) Saturday night in front of 1,437 fans in St. John Arena. OSU’s Stacey Gordon (Jr., Oshawa, Ontario) scored a match-high 32 kills for the Buckeyes with Amanda Miller (So., Littleton, Colo.) adding 14. Northwestern had four players with double-figure kills with Erika Lange recording a team-high 18. Iwona Lodzik added 17 kills with Jill Buschur contributing 14 and Christie Gardner, 10.

Ohio State broke a six-all tie in game one with a Miller kill, a block by Jackie Schardt (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Briana McCarthy (Fr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) and two Northwestern errors to take a 10-6 lead. OSU held the lead going on to a 30-21 win. Ohio State hit .276 in the game to .051 for the Wildcats.

Tied at four-all in game two, the Wildcats took a 7-4 lead with two kills from Lodzik and a Buckeye error. Northwestern continued to build the lead, winning the game, 30-20. The Wildcats hit .448 to .200 for Ohio State.

Northwestern took the early lead in game three. With OSU trailing, 10-7, three consecutive Gordon kills tied the game at 10. After five more ties, the last at 16, an ace serve by Ann a Tengnas (Fr., Hyltebruk, Sweden) gave OSU a 17-16 lead. OSU held a three-point lead (25-22) before a Leah Delcourt kill and two OSU errors tied the game at 25. A Gordon kill gave OSU a 26-25 lead. Gardner tied the game at 26 with a kill. Northwestern took a 28-26 lead off a Drew Robertson-Lange block and an ace serve by Buschur. Two Gordon kills tied the game at 28 and a Wildcat error made it 29-28, with OSU serving for the game. Two Lange kill put Northwestern up 30-29. OSU stopped three game points, tying the game at 32 on a Miller kill. Two Buschur kills ended the game at 34-32. Northwestern hit .295 for the game to .267 for OSU. OSU’s Gordon set an individual game high of 14 kills in the game.

After 16 ties in game four, Northwestern took a 21-19 lead off an OSU error and a block by Delcourt and Buschur. The Buckeyes could not close on the Wildcats who won the game, 30-26. Northwestern hit .342 for the game to .147 for OSU.

For the match, Northwestern hit .273 to OSU’s .224. The Wildcats had a 68-62 margin in kills and a 5-3 advantage in ace serves. Northwestern gave up 15 service errors to seven for OSU. The Buckeyes had a 48-40 advantage in digs with Heather Whalen (Sr., Kalamazoo, Mich.) collecting a match-high 14. At the net, Northwestern had a 14-12 margin with Wildcat Delcourt recording seven total blocks with two solos and five assists. NU setter Robertson had a match-high 56 assists to McCarthy’s, 54.

OSU will face Purdue, Nov. 7, in West Lafayette and Indiana, Nov. 8, in Bloomington next week.
