COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (10-13 overall, 4-11 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team dropped a 1-3 (30-22, 23-30, 30-26, 32-30) decision to Michigan State (18-7, 10-5) Friday night in St. John Arena. OSU’s Stacey Gordon (Jr., Oshawa, Ontario) had a match-high 30 kills for the Buckeyes with Amanda Miller (So., Littleton, Colo.) adding 16. Michigan State’s Kim Schram had a team-high 22 kills for the Spartans with Sara Villwock adding 13, Jenny Rood 11 and Megan Wallin 10.

Michigan State broke a nine-all tie in game one with a Schram block and an OSU error to take an 11-9 lead. Kills by Wallin, Villwock and Marley Bellwood and an OSU error opened up a 16-11 MSU lead. The Spartans held the lead to win the game, 30-22. Michigan State hit .345 for the game to .270 for Ohio State.

The Buckeyes opened a 7-0 lead in game two starting with a Gordon-D’wan Shackleford (Sr., Newark, Ohio) block. A Gordon kill, an MSU error and a Shackleford-Briana McCarthy (Fr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) block made it 4-0. Two Rebecca Kastein (So., Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) ace serves and a Gordon kill made it 7-0. OSU held the margin, winning the game, 30-23. The Buckeyes hit .229 for the game to .103 for the Spartans.

MSU opened game three with a Schram kill, a Buckeye error and a Nikki Colson ace for a 3-0 lead. OSU responded to tie the game at four. At 11-10, OSU, the Buckeyes took a 13-10 lead with kills by Katherine Grant (So., Nashville, Tenn.) and Gordon. The Spartans rallied to tie the game at 21 on a Schram kill. Tied at 23, an OSU error gave Michigan State the lead at 24-23. The Spartans built a four-point lead, winning the game, 30-26. Michigan State hit .091 for the game to .108 for Ohio State.

The Spartans built a 12-6 lead in game four. With OSU trailing 20-15, three kills by Gordon and two from McCarthy tied the game at 20. MSU reached match point at 29-28 but a Gordon kill tied the game at 29. A Spartan error gave OSU game point at 30-29. Villwock’s kill tied the game at 30. A Rood-Colson block set match point two for MSU and a Buckeye error closed out the game at 32-30. The Spartans hit .293 for the game to .356 for OSU.

For the match, Ohio State out hit Michigan State, .247 to .214 and had a 66-63 margin in kills. The Buckeyes edged the Spartans in aces, 5-4, while MSU gave up nine service errors to seven for OSU. Michigan State had a 57-54 margin in digs with MSU’s Bellwood collecting a team-high 12. OSU’s Anna Tengnas (Fr., Hyltebruk, Sweden) recorded a match-high 17 with Gordon adding 15. The Buckeyes edged MSU in team blocks, 14-13. For the Buckeyes, Shackleford had a match-high seven assist blocks. Colson for MSU and McCarthy for OSU each recorded 55 assists in the match.

OSU will host Michigan (16-10, 8-7) at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 16.
