COLUMBUS, Ohio – Behind an Ohio State match record eight ace serves by Stacey Gordon (Sr., Oshawa, Ontario) and a match-high 27.5 points, OSU (2-0 overall) defeated Temple (0-1) 3-0 (30-21, 30-17, 30-22) in the opening round of the Hampton Inn/Kaepa Temple Volleyball Classic. Gordon broke her own record of seven aces (tied with six others) against the Owls. She also contributed a match-high 19 kills (.630) and an assist block to record a match-high 27.5 points in the match. Temple’s Linsey Morninstar had a team-high 8.5 points for the Owls with a team-high seven kills, an ace serve and an assist block.

Temple held a 6-4 lead in game one before an Owl service error, kills by Gordon and Briana McCarthy (So., Beaver Dam, Wis.) and an ace serve by Ami Stevens (Fr., Centerburg, Ohio) gave the Buckeyes a 9-5 lead. OSU held a 13-8 margin when two Gordon ace serves and a Marisa Main (So., Louisville, Ky.) kill opened an 16-8 Buckeye lead. A Gordon kill closed out the game for the Buckeyes at 30-21.

A four-point Buckeye scoring run overcame a 7-6 Temple lead in game two with by two kills from McCarthy, one from Gordon and a Danielle Meyer (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio)-Gordon block to take a 10-7 lead. OSU held a 20-15 lead before outscoring the Owls, 10-2, and closed out the game with a Maya Mapp (Sr., Washington, D.C.)-Ami Stevens (Fr., Centerburg, Ohio) block for a 30-17 win.

Ohio State trailed Temple, 5-4, before a Gordon kill tied the game at five. Gordon then served three consecutive ace serves and served for points to take a 10-6 lead. The Buckeyes expanded the lead to win the game, 30-22, with a block by Meyer and McCarthy.

For the match, Ohio State hit .354 to Temple’s .169. The Buckeyes had a 51-29 kill margin and outserved the Owls, 12-1. The Buckeyes gave up 13 service errors to 11 for Temple. Defensively Ohio State had a 44-22 advantage in digs with OSU’s Gordon recording a match-high 10 digs. Owl Zhen Jia Liu had a team-high nine digs for Temple. At the net, Ohio State enjoyed a seven to five margin in team blocks. OSU’s Mapp recorded a match-high four blocks with one solo and three assists. In the opening match of the Classic, North Carolina defeated Western Michigan 3-0 (30-28, 30-26, 30-19). The Buckeyes continue play Saturday when they face North Carolina (1-0) at 9:30 a.m. and close out play at 3 p.m. against Western Michigan.
