COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (8-8, 2-5 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team, with five players reaching double-figure kills, defeated Purdue (9-10, 0-7) 3-1 (23-30, 32-30, 30-28, 30-25) Friday night in the Intercollegiate Athletic Facility. OSU’s Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario) had a team-high 21 kills for the Buckeyes with Shelly Draeger (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) equaling her career-high of 20 kills. OSU’s Suzie Stiling had 15 kills and Stephanie Higgins (Fr., Biggsville, Ill.) and Brie Hagerty (Fr., Defiance, Ohio) recorded career-highs of 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Purdue’s Joanna Lowry (Jr., Glen Ellyn, Ill.) had a match-high 23 kills for the Boilermakers with Kim McConaha (So., Centerville, Ind.) adding 12 and Tiffany Yoskey (Sr., Canal Fulton, Ohio) and Marie Franke (Fr., Ballwin, Mo.) recording 10 each.

Ohio State fell behind early in game one and never recovered as Purdue won the game 30-23. The Boilermakers hit .517 for the game to OSU’s .229. Lowry was the big gun for Purdue with five kills in six attempts.

The Buckeyes broke a 7-all tie in game two with kills by Stiling and Higgins. A Lowry kill cut the lead to 9-8. Kills by Higgins and Gordon made it 11-8. A Yoskey kill cut the margin to 11-9, but kills by Higgins and Gordon made it 13-9. Purdue countered and tied the game at 19 with a Franke kill. Tied at 21, two OSU errors, an ace serve by Jen Bova (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis.) and a block by Renata Dargan (Fr., New Lenox, Ill.) and McConaha opened a 25-21 Purdue lead. A Draeger kill and a Purdue error cut the lead to 25-23. A McConaha kill and a Boilermaker error moved the score to 26-24. Kills by McConaha and Gordon advanced the score to 27-25. Kills by Lowry and Higgins made it 28-26. A Gordon kill cut the lead to 28-27, but Lowry responded with a kill to set game point at 29-27. A Higgins kills stopped game point one at 29-28. A block by Draeger and Higgins stopped game point two at 29-29. A Draeger solo block gave OSU a 30-29 lead and serving game point. A Buckeye service error tied the game at 30. Draeger’s kill and a Purdue error closed the game at 32-30, Ohio State, tying the match at one game each. OSU was out hit in the game .289-.288 but had a 23-17 margin in kills. Buckeye Higgins had a team-high seven kills to match Purdue’s Lowry.

Ohio State held an early 3-1 lead, but Purdue tied the game at six and had a four-point lead at 27-23. A Stiling kill and an ace serve by Draeger helps Ohio State close the lead to 27-25. Lowry responded with a kill to make it 28-25. Kills by Hagerty and Stiling cut the margin to one at 28-27. A Gordon-Stiling block tied the game at 28. A solo block by Stiling gave the Buckeyes a 29-28 lead. Gordon’s kill closed out the game at 30-28 for a 2-1 Buckeye lead in the match. Purdue out hit Ohio State .318 to .250 in the game. Gordon had seven kills with Stiling adding six for the game.

Game four opened with a 3-0 Buckeye lead off a block by Gordon and Stiling, a Purdue error and a Gordon kill. OSU took the lead to four (7-3) with a Stiling ace serve. Purdue responded with two kills from Lowry, one from Yoskey and a block from Yoskey and Bova to tie the game at seven. Trailing 11-9, Purdue with two OSU errors tied the game at 11. Tied at 12, a Hagerty kill and a block by Stiling and Katie Virtue (Sr., St. Charles, Ill.) made it 14-12. OSU expanded the lead to four at 22-18, but Purdue closed to within one at 24-23 with a Buckeye error. A Purdue service error made it 25-23 but Lowry’s kill cut it to 25-24. Two Gordon kills opened a three-point lead at 27-24. Lowry cut the lead to 27-25 with a kill. A Higgins kill made it 28-25. Ohio State reached match point at 29-25 with a block by Higgins and Draeger. The Buckeyes closed out the game with a Draeger kill for a 30-25 win. Ohio State hit .325 for the game to .235 for Purdue. Draeger produced a team-high six kills in the game.

For the match, Purdue out hit Ohio State, .329-.274. The Buckeyes produced a season-high 80 kills in the match to 65 for the Boilermakers. OSU had a four-three margin in ace serves but gave up 13 service errors to 11 for Purdue. Ohio State had a 59-54 advantage in digs with Gordon recording a match-high 17. At the net, Purdue had an 11-10 margin in blocks. McConaha had a match-high six blocks with two solos and four assists for the Boilermakers with OSU’s Higgins (0-4), Stiling (1-3) and Draeger (1-3) collecting four blocks each. OSU’s Virtue had a season-high 64 assists in the match and added 14 digs. Dargan recorded 56 assists for Purdue.

Ohio State will play Saturday at Illinois (9-7, 3-4) who suffered a 3-2 (31-33, 30-15, 30-24, 24-30, 15-9) loss to Indiana (13-6, 3-4) Friday night.

Ohio State notes:

Katie Virtue had a season-high 64 assists in the match. Her previous best this season was 62 at Illinois-Chicago. She also had a season-high 14 digs with her previous best this season, 10 against Wisconsin.

Stephanie Higgins recorded a career-high 13 kills in the match. Her previous high was 10 against Loyola-Chicago.

Brie Hagerty had a career-high 10 kills in the match and hit a career-high .273 (10 kills, 4 errors, 22 attempts). Her previous highs were nine kills at Penn State and .182 at Michigan (7-3-22).

Shelly Draeger equaled her career-high of 20 kills in the match. She recorded 20 kills against Toledo in 2000. She also had a season-high four blocks (one solo, three assists). Previously she had had three blocks in five different matches.

Maria Pongonis (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) returned to action after missing the last 12 matches with a foot injury. She recorded two digs in the three games she played in.

Stacey Gordon, with 21 kills extended her consecutive matches with double-figure kills to 32. She has had double-figure kills in 45 of 47 matches in her career and has 20 matches with 20 or more kills. Gordon has had 21 or more kills in seven of her last eight matches (the other, 19).
