COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State (11-8 overall, 5-7 Big Ten) women’s volleyball, behind 14 kills by Jen Flynn defeated the Wildcats of Northwestern (2-19, 0-11) in a three-game sweep, 15-5, 15-5, 15-7. OSU’s Shelly Draeger and Dana Stearns added seven kills each with Suzie Stiling and Anne Botica contributing five apiece. NU’s Carmen Burbach scored a team-high eight kills for the Wildcats with Kitty Owen adding seven.

Northwestern started game one up 2-0 from two OSU errors, but a NU error and a kill by Sue Calligaris tied the game at two. OSU led 7-2 when three Buckeye errors cut the lead to 7-5. Four Wildcat errors gave OSU an 11-5 lead and back to back kills by Jen Flynn put the lead at 13-5. An OSU ace serve by Shelly Draeger set game point at 14-5 and Draeger’s kill ended the game at 15-5. Ohio State hit .321 for the game to .036 for Northwestern. OSU’s Flynn had a team-high five kills in the game with four from Draeger. Leah Ackerman collected three kills for Northwestern.

The Wildcats opened game two with a 1-0 lead off a kill by Carmen Burbach. OSU tied the game at two off a Dana Stearns kill and built a 7-2 lead off a block by by Katie Virtue and Stearns, kills by Rosie Snow and Sue Calligaris and two NU errors. OSU built up a 12-3 lead two kills by Jen Flynn, an ace serve by Shelly Draeger and two Wildcat errors. A Buckeye error and a kill by Burbach cut the lead to 12-5, but OSU reached game point (14-5) from a Northwestern error and an ace serve by Flynn. The Wildcats held off four game points before Flynn’s ace serve ended the game at 15-5. The Buckeyes hit .447 for the game to .212 for the Wildcats. Flynn had a game-high six kills with Stearns adding five. NU’s Burbach had four kills with Kitty Owen adding three.

Ohio State opened a 4-0 lead in game three on three NU errors and a kill by Dana Stearns. The Wildcats made it 4-1 off an OSU error. A NU error made it 5-1 and a kill by Suzie Stiling put the lead at 6-1. Wildcat Carmen Burbach made it 6-2 with a kill, but an ace serve by Stiling put the lead at 7-2. Jennifer Zagorski’s kill cut the lead back to 7-3 but three Wildcat errors gave OSU a 10-3 lead. The lead was cut to 10-6 off three Buckeye errors. A NU error made the score 11-6 but a kill by Burbach made it 11-7. An ace serve by Nikki Cisco put OSU up 12-7 and a block by Laura Stalling and Angelee Abbring and a kill by Anne Botica made the score 14-7 and match point for Ohio State. Northwestern sided out on match point with a kill by Cassie McKnight. The Buckeyes behind a kill by Erin Baker sided out setting OSU’s second match point. Baker served the ace for the point ending the game and match at 15-7. Ohio State hit .194 for the game while Northwestern hit -.063. Anne Botica and Jen Flynn had three kills each for OSU in the game while Burbach and Kitty Owen collected two kills each for Northwestern.

For the match Ohio State hit .330 as a team to .065 for Northwestern. The Buckeyes had nine blocks to four for the Wildcats while each team had 30 digs. OSU had a 7-0 advantage in ace serves. Ohio State collected 46 kills in the match to 29 for Northwestern.

Ohio State returns to the road next week to face Illinois Friday and Indiana Saturday.
