COLUMBUS, Ohio – With a 24-point performance by Stacey Gordon (Sr., Oshawa, Ontario), Ohio State moved its record to 3-0 with a 3-1 (30-23, 23-30, 30-25, 30-28) victory over North Carolina (2-1) in the second day of the Temple Volleyball Classic. Gordon had a match-high 22 kills, an ace serve and two assist blocks for her 24 points and added 14 digs in the match. Also in double-figure points were Danielle Meyer (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) with 21 points with 18 kills, two ace serves and two assist blocks and Briana McCarthy (So., Beaver Dam, Wis.) with 11 points from nine kills and two ace serves. North Carolina’s Molly Pyles had a team-high 20.5 points for the Tar Heels with Dani Nyenhuis adding 12.5 points. Pyles had a team-high 19 kills with an ace serve and an assist block while Nyenhuis collected 12 kills and an assist block. A Gordon kill and a North Carolina error gave Ohio State a 2-0 lead in game one. A Buckeye service error tied the game at five. A kill and ace serve by Marisa Main (So., Louisville, Ky.) gave OSU the lead at 7-5 and held that lead for a 30-23 lead with Ami Stevens (Fr., Centerburg, Ohio) scoring the final kill for the win. The Tar Hells took an early lead in game two and never trailed. North Carolina built a 10-point lead to own a 20-10 margin. Trailing 28-18, OSU scored five consecutive points to close to 28-23. UNC’s Caroline deRoeck and Katie Wright stopped the run with a block and a Pyles kill ended the game at 30-23, tying the match at one game each. Tied at eight, OSU used two kills from McCarthy and one from Gordon to take an 11-8 lead. The Buckeyes would hold the lead to win the game, 30-25 to take a 2-1 lead in the match. In game four, Ohio State trailed 26-24 when a McCarthy ace serve and a Tar Heel error tied the game at 26. Another North Carolina error and an Ami Stevens (Fr., Centerburg, Ohio) kill put OSU ahead, 28-26. The Buckeyes, with a Gordon kill, close out the game to win 30-28 to win the match, 3-1. For the match, Ohio State and North Carolina each hit .207. The Buckeyes had a 66-51 margin in kills and an eight to six advantage in ace serves. OSU gave up 15 service aces to eight for North Carolina. Defensively, OSU had a 65-60 margin in digs with Rebecca Kastein (Jr., Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) recording a match-high 18 digs for the Buckeyes. At the net, the Tar Heels and an eight to four advantage in team blocks with Katie Wright and Amy Beaver sharing match-high honors with four blocks each from a solo and three assists. OSU’s Main collected a match-high 57 assists for the Buckeyes to North Carolina’s McKenzie Byrd’s 39. Ohio State will face Western Michigan later today in its final match of the Temple Volleyball Classic.
