COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (12-10 overall, 6-7 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team with 18 points from Danielle Meyer (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) and 17.5 from Kristi Hunter (Fr., Roblin, Manitoba, Canada) won a 3-1 (30-26, 30-25, 23-30, 33-31) decision over Indiana (14-11, 5-8) Friday night in St. John Arena in front of 2,036 fans. Meyer had 15 kills and six assist blocks while Hunter recorded 13 kills, an ace serve, two solo blocks and three assist blocks. Indiana’s Kelsey Hall scored a match-high 22 points with 19 kills, an ace serve, a solo block and two assist blocks. Hoosier Ashley Benson added 19.5 points with 17 kills and five assist blocks.

 

With the score tied at 16 in game one, Ohio State scored five straight points starting with a Katie Dull (Fr., Solon, Ohio) kill to take a 17-16 lead. Three straight kills by Hunter and a Briana McCarthy (Sr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) solo block made it 21-16, Buckeyes. Leading, 24-19, OhioState held off a four-point Hoosier run to cut the OSU lead to one at 24-23. Two Indiana errors, a Hunter kill and an Anna Szerszen (So., Conflans Ste Hne, France)-Kaila Calhoun (Fr., Elkhart, Ind.) block gave OhioState a 28-23 lead. Errors by both team set game point at 29-24. Indiana, with an Ashley Benson kill and a Benson-Mara Hilgenberg block stopped two game points to make it 29-26. A Dull kill ended the game at 30-26 for OhioState, giving the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead in the match. OhioState hit .154 in the game to .125 for Indiana.

 

Indiana held the early 3-1 lead in game two. At 10-8, a Hoosier error and a McCarthy ace serve tied the game at 10. At 16-all, a Hall kill and a Buckeye error gave Indiana an 18-16 lead. At 19-17, a kill and solo block by Hunter tied the game at 19. Tied at 23, two Indiana errors and kills from Meyer and McCarthy gave OhioState a 27-23 lead. Kills from Erica Short and Dull put the score at 28-24. A block by Short and Annie Moddrell made it, 28-25.  An Indiana error set game point at 29-25. Another Hoosier error ended the game at 30-25 for OhioState, giving the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead in the match. OhioState hit .310 for the game to .186 for Indiana.

 

Tied at three in game three, four straight OSU errors gave Indiana a 7-3 lead. The Hoosiers expanded the lead to 18-12 before a five-point Buckeye run cut the lead to one at 18-17. A Buckeye error and two Hall kills put Indiana ahead, 21-17. The Hoosiers reached game point at 29-22 with a Short kill. A Dull kill stopped the game point at 29-23, but Short closed out the match with a kill at 30-23 to cut OhioState’s lead in the match to 2-1. Indiana hit .204 for the game to -.017 for OhioState.

 

Tied at 16 in game four, two kills from Meyer and one each from Dull and McCarthy gave Ohio State a 20-16 lead. A Hoosier block by Hilgenberg and Benson and a Benson kill cut the margin to 20-18. Kills from Dull and Benson moved the score to 21-19. A Hunter-Meyer block and kills from and kills from Meyer and Calhoun made it 24-19. Indiana made it 24-20 with a Short kill. OhioState took a six-point lead with a McCarthy kill and a Hunter-Calhoun block. Indiana scored the next six points to tie the game at 26 with a Hall kill. A Hoosier error and A Laura Ditteon kill made it 27-all. Kills from Dull and Benson tied the score at 28. A Benson kill gave Indiana a 29-28 lead serving game point. A Meyer kill (29-29) stopped the game point. A Hoosier error gave OhioState a 30-29 lead, serving for the match. Benson tied the game at 30, stopping the match point. Meyer, with a kill put OhioState ahead, 31-30, serving a second match point. An OSU error tied the game at 31. A Meyer kill made it 32-31, with the Buckeyes serving a third match point. The Buckeyes, with a Hunter kill, won the game, 33-31, to win the match, 3-1. OhioState hit .271 for the game while Indiana hit .233.

 

For the match, Indiana hit .193 to OhioState’s .163. The Hoosiers had a 66-65 edge in kills while the Buckeye had a six to three margin in ace serves. OSU’s McCarthy posted a match-high three aces in the contest. Indiana gave up 12 service errors to four for the Buckeyes. Defensively, Ohio State had an 88-82 advantage in digs with Ohio State’s Ami Stevens (Sr., Centerburg, Ohio) tying her career high of 27 with Indiana’s Juli Pierce recording a team-high 23. At the net, each team had 12 team blocks. OSU’s Meyer recorded a match-high six assist blocks while Indiana’s Benson had a team-high five assist blocks. Hoosier setter Hilgenberg had a match-high 59 assists in the match with OhioState’s McCarthy recording 50.

 

OhioState continues play at home when the Buckeyes host Purdue (13-11, 6-7) at 2 p.m. Sunday in St. John Arena.
