COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s track and field team opened competition Saturday in Minneapolis, Minn., at the 2008 Big Ten Championships. The Buckeyes are currently 10th though five events with 8 points. Defending champion Minnesota leads with 53 points. 

Senior Veronica Jatsek took third-place for Ohio State in the shot put with a toss of 49 feet, 6 inches scoring sixth points for the Buckeyes. Freshman Alana Gray grabbed the first points of the day for the Buckeyes with her seventh-place finish in the pentathlon with a score of 3,568. Gray was the top underclassmen in the event. 

In preliminary action, Junior Ayrizanna Favours won her heat of the 60-meter dash in a time of 7.62 to advance to the final on Sunday. Favours also earned a trip to the final of the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.65. Senior Chandra Krempel qualified for the finals of the 600-meter run with a time of 1:32.23 in the prelims. 

Events resume tomorrow inside University of Minnesota Fieldhouse at noon central time, when Jatsek will look to capture her first Big Ten indoor championships in the weight throw.
