Hubbs the second Buckeye to garner Player of the Week honors this month
COLUMBUS, Ohio Cami Hubbs, a freshman on the Ohio State women’s tennis team, was named the Big Ten Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week Wednesday by the Big Ten Conference. The honor follows the selection of teammate Julie Blackmore, who won the weekly award March 4.
Ohio State swept the conference tennis athlete of the week awards, as Steven Moneke won on the men’s side.
Hubbs, a native of Omaha, Neb., has had an outstanding freshman campaign. Last week, she helped lead the Buckeyes to a four consecutive victories, with singles wins over Coastal Carolina, Minnesota and Iowa. Hubbs’ win over Kelcie Klockenga of the Hawkeyes gave her 28 victories on the season, breaking the previous rookie record held by Kristi Jordan(1997) and assistant coach Sadhaf Pervez (2000) of 27 wins in their freshman campaigns.
Hubbs is now just three wins shy of the all-time singles season win mark of 31, held by Kristy Dascoli (2001). Currently, Hubbs is on a 10 match singles winning streak.
In addition to her singles dominance, Hubbs has also been excellent on the doubles court. Along with Blackmore, the duo won four matches last week, including an 8-1 victory over Milica Veselinovic and Merel Beelan of Iowa Sunday. In total, Hubbs and Blackmore have won 11 consecutive doubles matches.
