COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team recorded a NCAA `B’ standard in the 200-yard freestyle on the first day of competition at the Big Ten Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday in Minneapolis, Minn. The Buckeyes are in ninth place with 58 points.

The Buckeyes recorded a NCAA `B’ time in the 200-yard medley relay for a ninth-place finish when the quad of Elaine Chan (So., Hong Kong China/Hupp Yenn), Annie Rennenbom (Jr., Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington, Linda Lund (Jr., Roennede, Denmark/Haslev) and Griet Buelens (Jr., Kapelle-Op-Den-Bos, Belgium/Ursuline Academy) swam a time of 1:33.51.

Julie Broms (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) earned fourth place on the 1-meter springboard with a score of 295.40 to record her best finish in the event at a conference championship. The score also is her best for the season on the 1-meter.

Buelens qualified 10th in the preliminary session of the 500-yard freestyle with a NCAA `B’ time of 4:49.66, but fell to 15th in the finals session. She swam 4:52.20 in the evening. Teammate Haley Mitchell (Fr., Walled Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Western) also qualified for the consolation finals in the event. She swam 4:52.19, her best time to finish 15th in the morning and qualify for her first NCAA provisional time. Mitchell completed the event in 4:54.96 at night to place 16th.

The women concluded the evening with an eighth-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay. The team of Jill Lockhart (Fr., Muncie, Ind./Yorktown), Megan Alexander (Fr., Worthington, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne), Gulsah Gunenc (Sr., Edirne, Turkey/Edirne Anatolian), and Buelens swam a combined time of 3:47.95.

The Big Ten championships resume Friday, with the preliminary session beginning at noon and finals at 8 p.m., EST.
