COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s swimming team opened the 2008-09 season with a 160-82 victory over Division III reigning champion Kenyon College Saturday at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.

“It is a good start to the season for us,” Bill Dorenkott, head women’s swimming coach, said. “The team competed with enthusiasm and we are on the right track for the season.”

The Buckeyes had four swimmers finish with two wins apiece. Junior Jill Lockhart took wins in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events in times of 57.74 and 2:01.83, respectively. Sophomore Samantha Cheverton won both the 100 and 200 butterfly events, while classmate Katelyn Brix won the 200 breaststroke and 400 individual medley. Freshman Natalie Nichols picked up her first collegiate victories in the 200 (1:52.93) and 500 freestyles (4:59.31).

Two other Buckeyes earned their first collegiate wins during the meet. Junior Meg Noble captured first in the 50 freestyle (24.56) and freshman Lisa Narum won the 100 freestyle in 52.82.

The 200 medley relay squad of junior Haley Mitchell, freshman Catherine Eitel, Cheverton and Narum opened the meet with a win in 1:47.21. Senior Griet Buelens followed with a win in the 1000 freestyle (10:23.21).

Ohio State returns to McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion November 7 when the Buckeyes take on the Bearcats from Cincinnati. The co-ed dual meet begins at 6 p.m.
