COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team broke a team record in the 200-yard freestyle relay on the second day of competition at the 2007 Big Ten Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Minneapolis, Minn. The Buckeyes are in eighth place with 129 points.

The 200-yard freestyle relay of Gulsah Gunenc (Sr., Edirne, Turkey/Edirne Anatolian), Rebekah Rychavlsky (Sr., Sydney, Australia/Castle Hill), Linda Lund (Jr., Roennede, Denmark/Haslev) and Elaine Chan (So., Hong Kong China/ Hupp Yenn) kicked off the evening session with a team record, stopping the clock at 1:43.72 to finish in fifth place.

Gunenc later eclipsed her preliminary time of 55.95 in the 100-yard butterfly to improve to a 14th-place finish. She swam the event in a season-best time of 55.88 in the finals. Megan Alexander (Fr., Worthington, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) also improved her time in the 100-yard breaststroke to move up three places in the finals session. Her time of 1:04.47 earned her 13th place.

Julie Broms (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) improved her preliminary score of 286.30 by 41 points to finish fifth on the 3-meter in a score of 327.40.

The women concluded the second day of competition with an eighth-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The team of Griet Buelens (Jr., Kapelle-Op-Den-Bos, Belgium/Ursuline Academy), Jill Lockhart (Fr., Muncie, Ind./Yorktown), Sarah Krone (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) and Haley Mitchell (Fr., Walled Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Western) completed the race in 7:25.26.

“I was really happy to see the ladies bounce back tonight,” Jeanne Fleck, head women’s swimming coach, said. “We didn’t have a very good morning session, but the kids got it back together. We have our strongest day tomorrow.”

The Big Ten championships conclude Saturday, with the preliminary session beginning at noon and finals at 8 p.m., EST.
