COLUMBUS, Ohio Ohio State women’s swimmers combined for five individual wins and two relay victories to finish first at the Debbie Pipher Memorial Invitational, hosted by Washington State University. Freshman Samantha Cheverton was named Swimmer of the Meet in the two-day, four-team invite.

“I am really excited and proud of our team,” Jeanne Fleck, head women’s swimming coach, said. “We really fought back and every person did what they needed to do to pick it up and finish on top. Despite being behind for most of the time, our team stuck with it and really raced.”

Ohio State’s 212.5 points was enough to get by Pacific, which finished second with 206 points. Washington State was not far behind and took third (204) with Idaho finishing in a distant fourth (124.5).

On Friday evening, Cheverton won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.12. The 800 freestyle relay team, comprised of freshman Katelyn Brix, freshman Anita Beck, senior Annie Rennebohm and Cheverton, took first in a Gibb Pool record time of 7:35.03.

Cheverton captured both the 200 backstroke (2:03.48) and the 500 freestyle (5:00.88) on the second day of competition for the Buckeyes. Beck also picked up two wins in the 1,650 freestyle (17:16.77) and 200 butterfly (2:03.92). The 400 free relay team of freshman Maggie O’Brien, Beck, senior Linda Lund-Kristiansen and Cheverton touched the wall first in a time of 3:29.20.

Second-place finishers included Beck in the 400 individual medley (4:30.38) on Friday and sophomores Megan Alexander in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.58) and Jill Lockhart in the 200 individual medley (2:08.02) on Saturday.

“Samantha Cheverton and Anita Beck were outstanding for us. We were all very excited and really glad we came. Overall, it was a great experience for our team,” said Fleck.

In addition to the student-athletes already mentioned, also representing Ohio State in the meet were Haley Mitchell, Anastasia von Rahl, Colleen Schweitzer and Morgan Menzie.

The Buckeyes return to action when they host the University of Washington in a co-ed dual meet at the McCorkle Aquatics Pavilion on November 9 beginning at 5:00 pm.
