COLUMBUS, Ohio–The Ohio State women’s soccer team (1-1 overall, 0-0 in the Big Ten) made its first win of the season a dramatic one, defeating Syracuse, 3-2 in overtime Sunday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Syracuse’s Erin O’Grady put the Orangewomen on the board at 14:47. Seconds later Lindsay Eckles (So., Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) responded by shooting the ball past Syracuse goalkeeper Katie Karlander at 14:40. O’Grady responded back, adding her second and the Orangewomen’s second goal of the game at 17:23 off a pass from teammate Nina Scalzo.
Shelley Besson (So., Kettering, Ohio/The Miami Valley School) tied the game at two in the 75th minute of play. Assisted by Emily Thorpe (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore), Besson fired the ball into the back of the net, sending the game into overtime.
Ten minutes into the first overtime period, Eckles set up Brynn Catino (Jr., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) who outmaneuvered her opponent and fired a shot past Karlander for the win.
Eckles recorded seven shots for the Buckeyes, who outshot Syracuse 30-11. OSU goalkeeper Amber Barnes (Sr., Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) saved three shots.
Ohio State will travel to Columbia, Mo. to compete in the University of Missouri NIKE Classic Friday, Sept. 1 through Sunday, Sept. 3. The Buckeyes will compete against Wake Forest at 2:30 p.m. EDT Friday, Sept. 1, and will take on Florida State 11 a.m. EDT Sunday, Sept. 3.
