The Ohio State Buckeyes played 90 minutes of intense soccer, defeating Minnesota 2-1 at the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Minnesota took advantage of the Buckeyes in the 11th minute with a goal from Nicole Lee. Lee received a pass from Samantha Meyers and Amy Koehler, shooting the ball around Buckeye goalkeeper Amber Barnes (Jr., Fairfield, Ohio)into the left corner. OSU amassed 14 shots on the Golden Gophers but was scoreless in the first half.
Jamie Minteer (So., Springfield, Ohio) put the Buckeyes on the scoreboard in the 78th minute, with an assist from Katie Martorella (Sr., Englewood, Colo.). Minteer anchored the shot over Minnesota goalkeeper Dana Larson. A pass from Courtney Nein (So., Middletown, Ohio) allowed Martorella to fire a shot into the net in the 81st minute as Larson scrambled for a series of shots that were aimed at the goal.
“We just didn’t click in the first half,” head coach Lori Walker said. “In the second half, we played with a lot of heart and kept going after Minnesota.”
The Buckeyes are 7-2-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the Big Ten conference. OSU hosts Wisconsin, Sunday Oct. 3 at 11 a.m.
