COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s soccer team completed the 2006 preseason with a 1-1 tie vs. No. 9 Texas A&M Friday at Crew Stadium in a match that was delayed by rain for 35 minutes. Defender Melissa Miller got the Buckeyes on the board with a goal in the 70th minute.
The match was scoreless throughout the first half with the OSU defense recording three crucial team saves against an Aggie offense that tallied 13 shots in the stanza. OSU keeper and true freshman Lauren Robertson (Mission Viejo, Calif./So Cal Blues) made seven stops in the first 45 minutes of action to help keep the Buckeyes in the game.
In the second half, Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kolping), a senior tri-captain, scored the first goal of the game, firing a shot 20 yards out past A&M goalkeeper Julie Spearink at 70:46 off a pass from Lara Dickenmann (Jr., Kriens, Switzerland/DFC Sursee). With 6:54 remaining, Texas A&M’s Ashlee Pistorius scored the equalizer for the final.
Robertson’s save total for the match was 12. Aggie goalkeepers Kristin Arnold and Spearink split time in the net with Arnold compiling three saves and Spearink making two stops. The Texas A&M defense also recorded a team save.
The Buckeyes were out shot, 22-9, and the Aggies held the corner kicks advantage, 11-2. For the match, OSU had 15 saves to Texas A&M’s six.
Ohio State begins regular season play with a two-match weekend vs. Kent State at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 25 and vs. Xavier at 6 p.m. Aug. 27 in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
