Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s soccer team opened its 2003 road season Sunday night with a dominating 4-0 victory at Wright State, scoring four goals for the second-consecutive match. Ohio State junior Liz Mumley, who was moved up to forward from her usual midfield position, rose to the call as she tallied a career-best two goals to lead the Buckeyes to its first 2-0 start since the 2001 season.
Ohio State jumped out to a 2-0 lead less than 20 minutes into the game, as Mumley registered both of her goals in the first stanza. Mumley accepted a pass from fellow junior Emily Gilbert for the initial tally at 8:10 in the first half. Fellow junior Heather Miller also recorded as assist on the play. Gilbert and Mumley hooked up less than 10 minutes later as Mumley notched her second goal of the half to extend the OSU lead to 2-0.
“Our offensive attack has clicked so far in the first two matches of the season,” Walker said. “The best part of scoring eight goals in the two matches is that we have incorporated a number of players in our scoring attack. Liz Mumley stepped up and performed well in a new role tonight.”
The Ohio State offensive explosion continued in the second half as freshman defender Melissa Miller scored her first career goal in the 46th minute as she took advantage of a corner kick from fellow defender junior Paige Harrison and another assist from freshman Kate Linehan to put the Buckeyes up 3-0. Gilbert registered her third assist of the night, a career-high, in the 77th minute as she found junior forward Kathy Fulk for the final goal of the night.
The Buckeyes controlled the action from the start of the contest as they out shot the Raiders 22-9, including a 14-4 edge in the first half. In the shots on goal department, Ohio State held a 9-5 advantage. Over the opening weekend the Buckeyes out shot their opponents by an astounding 54 to 18 margin, while also holding a 32-8 advantage in shots on goal.
Ohio State goalkeepers junior Jen Heaney and freshman Staci Sinkway combined for the shutout, as Sinkway notched three saves in the second half, while Heaney claimed two in the first. The win went to Heany, her second in as many games.
The Buckeyes return to Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium Friday afternoon as they play host to the No. 11 Virginia Cavaliers at 1 p.m.
