COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s lacrosse team moves to 3-1 on the season after defeating UC Davis, 18-7, Friday at Aggie Stadium in Davis, Calif. With the loss, the Aggies drop to 0-4. The Buckeyes’ offensive attack had nine different players score at least one goal with senior Amanda Shimp and junior Rachel Hawes notching a team-high three each. Senior Kristen Slahor dished out eight helpers to tie the program record for assists in a single game set originally by Mara Simpson in 1998. Slahor also tied the record last year in the win over UC Davis in Columbus.

“It’s nice to get a win and have a chance to play a lot of our girls,” Sue Stimmel, Ohio State head coach, said. “The scoring was well balanced and hopefully this gives us confidence going into the game Sunday vs. Cal Berkeley.”

In the first half, the Buckeyes had six student-athletes record goals to give the squad a 12-2 lead heading into halftime. Ohio State tallied its first goal 28 seconds into the game when sophomore Kelly Haggerty feed Shimp the ball in the center. Shimp, a native of Endicott, N.Y., would add two more goals in the first half. Hawes also notched her hat trick before halftime.

Freshman Maghan Beaudrault tallied her team-best ninth goal of the season, scoring twice in the first half against the Aggies. Jessica Patane and Margaret Prunte each added a goal of their own while Brittney Zerhusen scored twice to give the Buckeyes 12 first-half goals. In the half, junior goalkeeper Kristen Gilwee saved five of seven shots and stopped all three free-position attempts.

Slahor, who leads the team in points (20) and assists (18), recorded six of her eight assists in the firs half.

Sophomore Kelly Haggerty opened up the scoring in the second half, notching her first of two goals only 51 seconds into play. Haggerty beat UC Davis’ goalkeeper Hilary Harkins again three minutes later to put Ohio State up, 14-2. Starting in the first half and carrying into the second, Ohio State tallied 10 unanswered goals before Aggie Katie McMahon notched her first score of the game at 6:08. Freshman Jacqueline Orona registered her fourth goal of the season 11:46 into the half while freshman Jayme Beard scored off a pass from Keri Yourick at 18:35 to put Ohio State up, 17-5. Patane would notch her second and the last Buckeye goal while UC Davis’ McMahon put in two last goals for the Aggies.

Gilwee played 49:04 minutes before freshman Annie Carruthers subbed in to finish out the last 10:56 of the game. In the win, Gilwee made six saves while allowing five goals.

Bethany Carey and Prunte led Ohio State with five groundballs each.

The Buckeyes play game two of the doubleheader against Cal Berkeley at 11 a.m. Sunday in Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, Calif.
