The Ohio State (2-11 overall, 1-3 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team dropped a 19-12 decision to Penn State on a rainy afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. OSU’s Jessica Patane (So., Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Lindsay Weiner (Jr., Eldersburg, Md.) scored three goals each to lead the Buckeyes. Penn State’s Lori Havrilla scored five goals with Shari Maslin adding four as eight Nittany Lions scored in the game.

Penn State opened the game by controlling the first three draws and scoring on each possession. The Nittany Lions jumped to a 7-0 lead behind two goals each by Havrilla, Maslin and Lindsay Dutch and a single score by Jessi Lieb. A Weiner goal with 13:47 gone put OSU on the board. Dutch added her third goal to make it 8-1. A Kristen Hannon (So., Sykesville, Md.) goal at 16:06, on a Kristen Slahor (So., Ellicott City, Md.) assist made it 8-2. Penn State responded with goals by Havrilla and Karen Long to make the score 10-2. At 28:08, Patane scored on a free position attempt, making the score 10-3. Long scored again to make it 11-3. OSU’s KC Carter (Sr., Birchrunville, Pa.) scored at 26:41 with an assist from Natale Miller (Jr., West Chester, Pa.). Maslin tallied again to make it 12-4. Weiner added the final goal of the half at 28:34, assisted by Kelyn Laws (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) to cut the Penn State lead to 12-5.

Penn State scored the first four goals of the second half to open a 16-5 lead. Havrilla scored twice with Maslin and Kim Kontson adding single goals. OSU’s Patane, with a Laws assist, scored at 36:43 followed by a Hannon free position goal at 39:53 to make it 16-7. Penn State took the lead to 10 on a Meg Boyd goal for a 17-7 lead before free position goals by Weiner at 42:55 and Laws at 43:36 made it 17-9. The Nittany Lions scored to lead 18-9 on a Boyd goal, but Patane countered with a goal, assisted by Hannon, making the score, 18-10. Penn State scored their 19th goal of the game by Brittany Jensen to lead 19-10. Buckeye goals by Amanda Shimp (So., Endicott, N.Y.) at 53:53 and Laws at 56:57 closed out the scoring with Penn State winning, 19-12.

In goal for Ohio State, Kristen Gilwee (Fr., Hunt Valley, Md.) had the start, taking the loss, while giving up six goals. Kim Hastings (Sr., Sewickley, Pa.) played the majority of the game for the Buckeyes, making two saves and giving up 10 goals. Joy DeMarco (Jr., Hudson, Ohio) closed out the game with nine saves, giving up three goals. For Penn State, Cammie Jurkowsky took the win as the starter, giving up six goals and making one save. Jess Boccio finished the game for Penn State making four saves while giving up six goals.

Ohio State continues a four-game home stand when they host Robert Morris (3-13) Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
