COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (2-10 overall, 1-2 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse team dropped a 9-8 decision at 19th-ranked Vanderbilt (6-7, 2-2) on a free position attempt as time expired. OSU’s KC Carter (Sr., Birchrunville, Pa.) scored a team-high three goals and Kristen Slahor (So., Ellicott City, Md.) added two for the Buckeyes. Commodore Cara Giordano had three goals for Vanderbilt with Kate Hickman adding two.

Vanderbilt opened the scoring with a Hickman goal, assisted by Kendall Thrift with 3:39 gone in the game. The Commodores made it 2-0 with a Giordano goal at 4:16, assisted by Leslie Koch. VU took the lead to 3-0 at 10:09 with a Leslie Koch goal, assisted by Margie Curran. The Buckeyes, at 18:28, made it 3-1 with a Carter goal assisted by Kristen Hannon (So., Sykesville, Md.). Hickman’s second goal at 19:55 gave Vanderbilt a 4-1 lead. Ohio State scored at 21:26 on a Slahor goal assisted by Hannon and Slahor’s second goal at 28:55 ended the scoring in the first half with Vanderbilt leading, 4-3.

The Commodores opened the second half with Giordano’s second goal at 34:21. OSU countered with Carter’s second goal at 36:27, making the score, 5-4. Vanderbilt, with a free position goal by Margie Curran at 37:11 and a Cameron Clark goal, assisted by Thrift at 39:37 opened a 7-4 lead. The Buckeyes responded with Carter’s second goal at 41:20 and a score by Hannon at 43:19 to trail by one at 7-6. The Commodores took an 8-6 lead with a free position goal by Jennifer Tapscott at 55:02. Ohio State again cut the Vanderbilt lead to one at 8-7 with a Natale Miller (Jr., West Chester, Pa.) free position goal at 58:50. The Buckeyes tied the game at eight at 59:08 with a Kelyn Laws (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) goal assisted by Carter. OSU controlled the draw but a Buckeye turnover with 32 seconds left gave Vanderbilt the ball. The Commodores had a shot with 10 seconds left that was saved by Kristen Gilwee (Fr., Hunt Valley, Md.). Vanderbilt controlled the ground ball and Giordano was fouled. She scored as the horn sounded for a 9-8 Commodore victory.

OSU’s Gilwee took the loss for the Buckeyes making 19 saves in the game. Vanderbilt’s Brooke Shinaberry had 10 saves in the win.

The Buckeyes return home next week to face 18th-ranked Penn State (5-8, 1-1) Friday at 5 p.m. and then host Robert Morris (2-13) Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
