COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team (1-4-0 overall, 1-4-0 WCHA) upset the No. 6 Wisconsin Badgers (4-3-0, 4-3-0 WCHA), 3-2, Saturday afternoon at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis. The Buckeye victory marked only the second win for Ohio State against Wisconsin in program history. The first OSU win was March 4, 2000 in the consolation game of the 2000 WCHA Final Five in Bloomington, Minn.

The Buckeyes face off against Wisconsin at 3:05 p.m. Sunday at the Kohl Center for game two of the two-game series in Madison.

Ohio State came out strong immediately scoring the first goal of the game eight seconds into the period. Senior Emma Laaksonen (Sr., Espoo, Finland) obtained the puck off the faceoff for a pass to Jana Harrigan (So., Burlington, Ontario), who passed to Erin O’Grady (Sr., London, Ontario) in front of the net. O’Grady’s shot was saved and senior Heather Farrell (Sr., Perth, Ontario) skated in and scored off the rebound. O’Grady and Harrigan were credited with the assists. The Buckeye defense held Wisconsin scoreless in the first period, despite the Badgers outshooting OSU 8-6.

The Buckeyes took the same approach at the start of the second period, as junior Jaclyn Haines (Jr., Rossland, British Columbia) scored her first career goal from the top of the circle on a pass from Jeni Creary (Jr., Shell Lake, Saskatchewan) and Crystal Sayther (So., Burnsville, Minn.) at 1:17. Wisconsin cut the Buckeyes’ led to one, as Sharon Cole scored a power-play goal on a shuffle in front of the net at 6:55. Ohio State came back with a power-play goal, as freshman Tessa Bonhomme(Fr., Sudbury, Ontario) scored her first career goal from the middle of the circle at 16:11, assisted by Laaksonen and Creary. Shots were tied at 12 in the second period. Wisconsin attempted a comeback in the third period, as the Badgers tallied 15 shots to OSU’s one. Ohio State was close to a 3-1 win over Wisconsin, when the Badgers came back with a goal by Molly Engstrom at 19:44.

OSU goaltender Melissa Glaser (Jr., Rockford, Ill.) recorded 34 saves and allowed two goals in the full 60:00 minutes of action. UW goalie Meghan Horras tallied 15 saves, allowing three goals in 60:00 minutes of play.

The Badgers outshot the Buckeyes 36-18. Ohio State held Wisconsin to 1-4 on the power-play. The Buckeyes were 1-4 on the power play.
