COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team skated past the Niagara Purple Eagles, 5-1, Saturday in the first meeting between the teams at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes improved their record to 6-5-0 overall (5-5-0 WCHA), as they earned their fifth consecutive victory this season. The Purple Eagles fall to 2-7-2 overall this season.

Ohio State takes on the Niagara Purple Eagles at 2:05 p.m. Sunday for game two of the non-conference series.

OSU freshman Krysta Skarda (Fr., Lake Elmo, Minn.) scored her first career goal off her own rebound at 7:17 to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 advantage in the first period. Freshman Lacey Schultz (Kelvington, Saskatchewan) and senior Meaghan Mulvaney (Jr., Sylvania, Ohio) assisted on the Buckeye goal. Niagara ousthot Ohio State 12-9 in the first period.

In the second period, Skarda scored her second goal of the game on a power-play opportunity at 5:24. Amber Bowman (Fr., Innisfil, Ontario) and Jana Harrigan (So., Burlington, Ontario) assisted on the goal. Immediately following the OSU goal, Niagara’s Kerri-Lynn O’Hara scored her first career goal to put the Purple Eagles on the scoreboard at 5:35. The Buckeyes outshot the Purple Eagles 17-7 in the second stanza.

The Buckeyes tallied three goals in the third period to secure their win over Niagara. OSU freshman Bowman scored her second career goal, which was assisted by Tessa Bonhomme (Fr., Sudbury, Ontario) and Heather Farrell (Sr., Perth, Ontario) at 1:22. Buckeye captain Meaghan Mulvaney (Jr., Sylvania, Ohio) scored power-play goal at 11:39. OSU seniors Emma Laaksonen (Sr., Espoo, Finland) and Farrell assisted on the goal. Buckeye junior Jeni Creary (Jr., Shell Lake, Saskatchewan) scored her second goal of the season at 15:58. OSU sophomore Crystal Sayther (Burnsville, Minn.) assisted on the goal. Ohio State outshot Niagara 15-7 in the third period. OSU goaltender Melissa Glaser (Jr., Rockford, Ill.) recorded 25 saves on 26 Niagara shots. NU’s goalie Allison Rutledge tallied 36 saves on 41 Buckeye shots.

The Buckeyes outshot the Purple Eagles 41-26. Ohio State capitalized on 2-of-5 power plays, while the Buckeye penalty-killing unit held Niagara scoreless on two power-play opportunities.
