COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team clipped the Bemidji State Beavers, 2-1, Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes improved their record to 4-5-0 overall and in the WCHA, while the Beavers fell to 1-9-1 overall and 0-7-0 in the WCHA this season.
Ohio State and Bemidji State return to action at 4:05 p.m. Saturday for game-two of the series at the OSU Ice Rink.
Both Ohio State and Bemidji State ended the first period scoreless. OSU dominated the stanza as it posted 12 shot to BSU’s six. The Buckeyes had one power-play opportunity, but were unable to score.
In the second period, OSU forward Jana Harrigan (So., Burlington, Ontaro) scored the first goal of the game on a breakaway at middle ice at 5:49. Harrigan’s goal marked her fourth on the season. The Buckeyes held Bemidji State to one shot on goal, while they tallied eight in the stanza.
Ohio State opened the third period with a goal by Jennifer Desson (Jr., Niagara Falls, Ontario) at 5:51. Desson continues to lead the Buckeyes with seven goals on the season, while senior Emma Laaksonen (Sr., Espoo, Finland) earned her fifth assist on the goal. Bemidji State attempted a comeback after OSU’s second goal. The Beavers took advantage of a power play to score their first goal at 11:41. The Beavers pulled their goaltender with 49 seconds remaining, but were unsuccessful in their attempt to tie the game.
OSU goaltender Melissa Glaser (Jr., Rockford, Ill.) posted 19 shots and allowed one goal in the full 60 minutes of action. BSU’s goalie Anik Cote tallied 26 shots 59:11 minutes.
The Buckeyes outshot the Beavers 28-20. Ohio State was 1-0 on the power play, while holding Bemidji State to 3-of-4 power plays.
