COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team extended its undefeated streak to six games with a 4-1 win against North Dakota in a WCHA game Friday at OSU Ice Rink. The Buckeyes are 5-0-1 during that span and have the fourth-longest unbeaten streak in the nation. OSU has held its opponents to one goal or less in those six games. Overall, Ohio State improves to 7-5-1 with a 3-5-1 WCHA record. The Fighting Sioux are 2-9-0 with a 0-7-0 mark in league games.

The line of Morgan Marziali (St. Mary’s, Ontario/London Devilettes), Hayley Klassen (Warman, Saskatchewan/College of Notre Dame) and Shelby Aldous (LaSalle, Ontario/Windor Wildcats) combined for five points while the defensive pairing of Tessa Bonhomme (Sudbury, Ontario/Sudbury Lady Wolves) and Amber Bowman (Innisfil, Ontario/Beatrice Jr. Aeros) also totaled five points. Junior forward Erin Keys (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) tallied the other two points for the Buckeyes on a goal and an assist.

Ohio State scored twice on the power play to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. The first goal was scored at 1:52 to go up 1-0 early in the game. Keys tipped in a slap shot from the point by Bowman who picked up the puck on a pass from the boards by Bonhomme. The three Buckeyes combined to score again while on the man-advantage at 14:19. This time, Bowman fired the puck in from the slot and Keys passed it over to Bonhomme, who charged toward the Sioux goal and knocked the puck in to increase the OSU lead to 2-0.

Ohio State held its two-goal lead into the first intermission with a 14-10 advantage in shots.

North Dakota cut the lead to 2-1 with a goal in the opening minutes of the second period. Ashley Lynch erased the shutout when her shot from the slot snuck in over the right leg of senior goaltender Erika Vanderveer (Bradford, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) at 2:35.

That would be the one and only Sioux goal though as Vanderveer made a total of 21 saves in the game to improve to 6-2-1. She has a .952 save percentage and 1.45 goals-against-average this season. In her last six games, Vanderveer has allowed just five goals with 172 saves for a .972 percentage and 0.82 GAA.

Klassen upped the Ohio State lead to two goals again at 8:04 when she picked up the rebound of a shot by Marziali and crashed it into the UND net. It was her fourth goal of the season and Marziali’s seventh assist. Bonhomme picked up the second assist of the goal.

The Buckeyes held its 3-1 lead until the last second of the game when Marziali banked in a shot from inside the blue line for a final of 4-1. With :04 left on the clock, Aldous won a face off just over the blue line in the neutral zone. Klassen picked up the puck and tapped it over to Marziali, who fired it into the middle of the Sioux goal as the horn blew for her seventh lamplighter of the season. Klassen recorded her third assist while Aldous picked up her fourth.

Overall, Ohio State outshot North Dakota 37-22, including an 11-5 margin in the third period. The Buckeyes were 2-for-5 on the power play while UND was 0-for-7. It was the sixth game in a row the Ohio State penalty kill did not allow an opponent to score with the man-advantage with a perfect 29-for-29 mark in those games.

With two points each, Keys and Bowman continue to lead the Buckeyes with 15 points. Keys has six goals and nine assists while Bowman has five goals and a team-high 10 helpers. Marziali (7g, 7a) and Bonhomme (5g, 9a) are tied for third with 14 points. Marziali’s seven goals are a team high.

The Buckeyes and Fighting Sioux will conclude their WCHA series with a 12:07 p.m. game Sunday at OSU Ice Rink.
