Bonanno matches season-high with 39 saves; LaRocque and Reilly tally two assists each
ST. CLOUD, Minn. The Ohio State women’s hockey team split its series with St. Cloud State after a 5-2 loss Sunday at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. Senior goaltender Liana Bonanno tied her season-high with 39 saves but the Buckeyes dropped to 5-7-0 overall and 3-7-0 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The Huskies are 5-5-2 and 2-5-1 in the conference.
After a scoreless first period, the teams exchanged leads in the second for a 2-2 tie. Michelle Moen of St. Cloud State opened the scoring at 4:15 when she scored into the back right corner of the net off an assist by Sammy Nixon.
The Buckeyes scored twice in a 4-minute span to take the lead at 2-1. Junior Raelyn LaRocque passed the puck from behind the net to sophomore Christina Mancuso, who scored her first goal of the season on a wrist shot from the left side at 10:02. Sophomore Shannon Reilly picked up the second assist.
Ohio State then capitalized on a 5-on-3 power play, when junior Rachel Davis scored while the Buckeyes swarmed the net. Reilly and LaRocque each collected their second assists of the game.
St. Cloud State evened the score at 18:51 when Meaghan Pezon swept in a loose puck behind Bonanno with assists by Megan McCarthy and Danielle Hirsch.
The Huskies scored three times in the third period to pull away with the win. Felicia Nelson gave SCSU the lead at 12:04 off a rebound and McCarthy built it to 4-2 when she scored at 17:02. Holly Roberts sealed the game with a clearing attempt that bounced in off the boards for the empty-netter at 19:21.
St. Cloud State finished with a 44-21 advantage in shots. The Buckeyes were 1-of-4 on the power play and a perfect 5-of-5 on the penalty kill.
Ohio State returns to Columbus next weekend to host defending NCAA champion Minnesota Duluth, Nov. 14-15. Games begin at 7 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday at the OSU Ice Rink.
