OWATONNA, Minn. – The Ohio State women’s hockey team defeated Minnesota State, 2-1, in the first game of a two-game WCHA series on Friday, Nov. 24, at the Four Seasons Centre in Owatonna, Minn. The win stretched OSU’s undefeated streak to eight games (7-0-1), the longest in the country with Wisconsin and Princeton both losing Friday.

The Buckeyes improved to 9-5-1 on the year (5-5-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association), while the Mavericks dropped to 5-8-1 overall (3-7-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association).

Buckeye junior Tessa Bonhomme (Sudbury, Ontario) tallied a goal and an assist for OSU, including the game-winning goal in the second period.

Ohio State jumped out in front, 1-0, at 7:31 of the first period on a short-handed tally by Jody Heywood (Jr., Regina, Saskatchewan). The goal was assisted by junior Shelby Aldous (LaSalle, Ontario) and Bonhomme. It was Heywood’s fourth goal of the season, Aldous’s sixth assist and Bonhomme’s 10th as OSU outshot MSU 15-5 in the opening period.

Minnesota State evened the score at one at 4:32 of the second period on a power-play goal but the Mavericks lead didn’t last long. OSU regained the lead just :59 seconds later on Bonhomme’s game-winner at 5:31 of the period. Junior Erin Keys (St. Paul, Minn.) and Mallory Peckels (Jr., Minocqua, Wis.) assisted on the goal. It was Bonhomme’s sixth goal of the year, Keys’ 11th assist and Peckels eighth. The third period was scoreless as OSU held on for the 2-1 road win.

Buckeye netminder Erika Vanderveer (Sr., Bradford, Ontario) made 22 saves on the night for OSU to improve to 8-2-1 on the year. Ohio State ended the game with 26 shots, while MSU had 23.

The Buckeyes were 0-for-6 on the power play in the game, while the Mavericks were 1-of-7.

Ohio State and Minnesota State conclude the series with a 2:07 p.m. (CT) game Saturday.
