COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team blanked North Dakota, 4-0, Sunday at OSU Ice Rink to complete the series sweep and extend its unbeaten streak to seven games, the third-longest in the nation. Junior Erin Keys scored twice and added an assist and senior goaltender Erika Vanderveer stopped all 26 shots faced as the Buckeyes improved to 8-5-1 overall and 4-5-1 in the WCHA. The Fighting Sioux are 2-10-0, 0-8-0 in conference games.

Vanderveer (Bradford, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) recorded her second shutout of the season and eighth of her career. It was the second time she has blanked an opponent in the last five games. Her 26 saves included 11 in the third period and nine UND power play shots. Vanderveer has allowed just five goals in the last seven games, for a 0.71 goals-against-average and .976 save percentage. For the season, she is 7-2-1 with a 1.31 GAA and .956 save percentage, which ranks first in the nation.

Ohio State scored one goal in the first, two in the second and one in the third in a balanced offensive attack. Two of the four goals were on the power play, including the first one of the game at 14:37. Junior defenseman Lisa Chesson (Plainfield, Ill./Chicago Mission) scored from the left circle on passes from senior Amber Bowman (Innisfil, Ontario/Beatrice Jr. Aeros) and Keys (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall). The goal was Chesson’s fifth of the season. The Buckeyes took their 1-0 lead into the first intermission with a 9-7 advantage in shots. Keys scored just 2:00 into the second period with assists from her linemates to increase the lead to 2-0. Jody Heywood (Regina, Saskatchewan/Regina Cougars) passed the puck up from the OSU zone to Mallory Peckels (Minocqua, Wis./Madison Capitols) who fed it to Keys in front of the UND net. She flicked the puck in for her first of two goals in the game. Peckels picked up her seventh assist of the year while Heywood tallied her fourth.

While on the power play just minutes later, sophomore Hayley Klassen (Warman, Saskatchewan/College of Notre Dame) scored from just inside the right circle at 6:26 to up the score to 3-0. Klassen tallied her fifth goal of the season on assists by junior Shelby Aldous (LaSalle, Ontario/Windsor Wildcats), her fifth, and sophomore Morgan Marziali (St. Mary’s, Ontario/London Devilettes), her eighth.

Ohio State outshot the Fighting Sioux 15-8 in the second for a margin of 24-15 after two periods.

Keys notched her second goal of the game and eighth of the season when she tipped in a shot from Bowman at 16:57 of the third period for a final of 4-0. The assist was Bowman’s second of the game and increased her team-leading total to 12.

The Buckeyes finished the game with a 28-26 edge in shots. They were 2-for-5 on the power play for a total of 4-for-10 in the series. The OSU penalty kill continued its perfect streak, holding North Dakota 0-for-5 with the man-advantage. In the last seven games, the Buckeye penalty kill has been 34-for-34.

For the weekend, Keys (3g, 2a) and Bowman (1g, 4a) lead Ohio State with five points each. Aldous, Marziali, Klassen and junior Tessa Bonhomme (Sudbury, Ontario/Sudbury Lady Wolves) also had multiple points.

The series concluded Ohio State’s home schedule for 2006. The Buckeyes will be on the road for their next three series, starting with a two-game WCHA matchup at Minnesota State Nov. 24-25. Games begin at 7:07 p.m. (CT) Friday and 2:07 p.m. Saturday at Four Seasons Arena in Owatonna, Minn. The Buckeyes will not return to OSU Ice Rink until Jan. 5-6 with a series against Bemidji State.
