COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State sophomore golfer Mollie Fankhauser (Dublin, Ohio) and former Buckeye Lisa Strom (North Wales, Pa.) each were eliminated Wednesday at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, hosted at the par-72 Waverley Country Club in Portland, Ore.

Fankhauser advanced to the second round of play after defeating Christina Kim of San Jose, Calif., 3 and 2. Fankhauser then ran into 14-year-old phenom Aree Wongluekiet of Bradenton, Fla., falling on the final hole, 1 up. Wongluekiet is ranked 16th in the Golfweek/Titleist amateur rankings.

Strom dropped her first-round match with former Duke star Beth Bauer, 2 and 1. Bauer currently is the No. 1-ranked amateur in the Golfweek/Titleist rankings.

Fankhauser and her OSU teammates begin the 2000-01 season Sept. 15-17 at the NCAA Fall Preview in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
