Madison, Wisc. — Defending champion Arizona State has a seven-stroke lead after the first day of the 1998 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship being held at University Ridge Golf Course. The Sun Devils, who have won four of the last five NCAA titles, shot an 11-under-par 277. 1998 Big Ten Conference champion Indiana is a surprising second-place finisher after the first 18 holes with a four-under-par 284. Duke and Florida are tied for fourth with a three-under-par 285.

Ohio State is still in the hunt at +6, tied for eighth place. Natalie Mosher leads all Buckeye golfers at even-par 72, good for a tie in 22nd place.

Arizona State’s Grace Park and Duke’s Jenny Chuasiriporn are battling it out for individual medalist honors. Both shot course records 65, tying the NCAA championship record for one round. The seven-under-par mark was first set by Vicki Goetze of Georgia in 1992 and tied by Caroline Peek of Furman in 1995. Jenny Gray of Indiana is in third with a five-under-par 67.

Of the 99 participants in the championship, 21 shot below par enjoying the near perfect conditions on the course.

The second round of the championship will tee off at 8 a.m. on Thursday.
