%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State women’s golf team shot a 306 in the first round of the NCAA West Regional Thursday, earning a fifth-place standing at the par-72 Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore. The top eight teams and two individuals from the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships May 22-25.%^$

%^$The race for the eight championship berths is tight, as five teams are tied for seventh place with a 308. Arizona dominated the first day of competition with a 1-under-par 287, grabbing a 15-stroke lead over Stanford. Michigan State (304), Memphis (305), OSU (306) and UCLA (307) are all just ahead of the seventh-place logjam.%^$

%^$Big Ten Player of the Year Mollie Fankhauser (So., Dublin, Ohio/Cols. School for Girls) tied a career low with a 70 (-2) in the first round. She is knotted with Arizona’s Lorena Ochoa for second place, two strokes behind Arizona’s Natalie Gulbis.%^$

%^$Jennifer Borowiec (Fr., South Lyon, Mich./Mercy) posted the Buckeyes’ second-best round of the day, a 77, as she tied for 31st place. Natalie Aber (Jr., Akron, Ohio/Springfield) carded a 78, tying for 45th place.%^$

%^$Allison Hanna (Fr., Portland, Ore./David Douglas) shot an 81, while Ashley Lowery (Jr., West Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) recorded an 82.%^$

%^$The tournament continues with single rounds Friday and Saturday.%^$
