%^$ COLUMBUS, Ohio – In defense of its 1999 Big Ten championship, the Ohio State women’s golf team fired two of its best rounds of the season on Friday, yet still stood in second place to Purdue, who registered Big Ten Championship-record rounds of 287 (-1) and 289 (+1) to grab a commanding 16-stroke lead over the Buckeyes after two rounds at the Big Ten Championship, hosted by Wisconsin at the par-72 University Ridge Golf Course.%^$

%^$ OSU fired a season-low 294 (+6) in the first round and followed it up with its third-lowest round of the season, a 298, in the second round. All six OSU golfers recorded rounds under 80 in the first day of play, but the Boilermakers had three players card tournament-record rounds in the 60s. Purdue’s Stacy Orschell and Kari Damron share the lead after two rounds with a 141 (-3). Purdue fired an even-par 576 on Friday, while OSU shot a 592, three strokes ahead of third-place Michigan State and seven ahead of host Wisconsin.%^$

%^$ Lisa Strom (Sr., North Wales, Pa.) jumped out strong on the first day of action, firing a one-under 71 in the first round, while shooting a 75 in the second round, leaving her with a 146 after two rounds, which is tied for fourth place overall. Mollie Fankhauser (Fr., Dublin, Ohio) also was solid for the Buckeyes, shooting rounds of 75 (+3) and 73 (+1) for a 148, which left her in a tie for ninth place.%^$

%^$Natalie Aber (So., Akron, Ohio), coming a career-best performance at last weekend’s Lady Buckeye Spring Invite, continued her solid play with a career-low 74 in the first round. She followed it up with a 77 in the second round, finishing with a 151, as she and teammate Amber Amstutz (Sr., Leo, Ind.) tied for 22nd at 151. Kelly Moskal (So., Hinckley, Ohio) shot a season-low 74 in the first round.%^$

%^$The tournament continues on Saturday with the third round of play. The final round takes place on Sunday.%^$
