COLUMBUS, Ohio Ohio State guard Marscilla Packer was drafted by Phoenix Mercury in the 2008 WNBA Draft Wednesday in Tampa, Fla. Packer was selected No. 41 overall in the third round.

“I’m very excited about this opportunity,” Packer said. “It’s going to take a while before it sinks in. I’m going to a great team in the Phoenix Mercury, the defending WNBA champs, and I know I’ll have my work cut out for me. Now is when the real work begins. There are a lot of great players in the WNBA and you have to work hard everyday or it can be taken away from you just as quickly.”

“I want to thank my family, my high school coach Dave Butcher, Troy Taylor, coach Foster, my teammates and everyone at Ohio State for helping this dream come true. I couldn’t have done it without all their support and direction.”

Packer averaged 15.1 points her senior year as she helped guide the Buckeyes to their fourth-consecutive Big Ten championship and a berth in the NCAA tournament. She finished her career second on Ohio State’s all-time 3-point list with 236 makes and 580 attempts. She hit three or more treys 14 times this past season while the Buckeyes posted a 12-2 mark in those games. Packer connected on a career-high 80 treys on the season, which is tied for third on Ohio State’s single-season list, while leading the Big Ten and ranking 22nd nationally with 2.6 3FG’s per game. She is only the third Buckeye in school history to record at least 1,000 points and 200 3FG’s in a career.

A second-team All-Big Ten selection this season, Packer is a member of the winningest class in school history with 109 victories, winning the Big Ten regular-season title all four years. She was a member of USA Basketball’s U21Team last summer, helping the Americans to a gold medal in Moscow.

The Pickerington, Ohio, native is the fourth Buckeye to be picked in the draft in the last three years and the fifth during head coach Jim Foster’s six-year tenure. Last year Jessica Davenport (second overall) and Brandie Hoskins (33rd overall) were taken, marking the first time multiple Buckeyes were drafted in the same year.
