COLUMBUS, Ohio The No. 14 Ohio State women’s lacrosse team dropped a 10-8 contest to No. 4 North Carolina Friday night at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium as part of the ALC/ACC Challenge. The loss snapped a seven-game Ohio State win streak.

In an evenly played game, North Carolina took its biggest lead at 7-3 at the start of the second half on a free-position goal by Jenn Russell with just 1:35 elapsed in the second period. Three Ohio State goals during the next six minutes by Alayna Markwordt (24:39), Kelly Haggerty (23:29) and a free-position score by Maghan Beaudrault (22:37) brought the Buckeyes to within one at 7-6.

The Tar Heels’ Kristen Taylor scored at 17:42 to give UNC an 8-6 advantage, but Haggerty answered for the Buckeyes just 41 seconds later with an unassisted goal to make the score 8-7. After a UNC goal by Becky Lynch, Ohio State scored once more, on a shot by Beaudrault from Markwordt at 9:22, but Laura Zimmerman’s score with 7:04 remaining gave North Carolina its 10-8 win.

Markwordt, Haggerty and Beaudrault each had two goals for Ohio State, while Jayme Beard and Olivia Annalora scored once each. Russell and Taylor had three goals each for UNC.

In goal, senior Kristen Gilwee took the loss for the Buckeyes, despite 12 saves in the game, seven of those during second-half action.

“I’m disappointed about the loss but proud of the effort we put forth,” said OSU coach Sue Stimmel. “This season, we’ve been trying to prove we can play with the best and I believe we did that tonight.

“Maryland’s a great team. We have to take this loss, learn from it, and be ready Sunday.”

In the first game of Friday’s doubleheader, No. 2 Maryland defeated No. 17 Penn State 20-12. The Terrapins were ahead 14-8 at the half and got eight goals from sophomore Laura Merrifield, seven of those in the first period.

Ohio State (9-2) faces Maryland (12-0) Sunday at 1:30 p.m. while Penn State (5-5) and North Carolina (10-2) square off Sunday at 11 a.m. at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Admission is free.
