COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s lacrosse team won its 2009 American Lacrosse Conference opener, upsetting No. 18 Johns Hopkins 22-12 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon.

It was the first win for Ohio State over a ranked team since 2007, when the Buckeyes defeated No. 8 Penn State 9-8.

Freshman Alayna Markwordt tallied 11 points on six goals and five assists, tying the highest single-game scoring total in Ohio State records; six goals in a single game ranks second on the OSU all-time list. Senior Kristen Gilwee recorded 19 saves in goal against the Blue Jays, the fifth-best effort in OSU history.

“We’re very excited with the outcome,” said an excited OSU coach Sue Stimmel. “We thought we could play well against them, but I certainly wouldn’t have predicted we would win by 10.

“It’s just a fantastic feeling to have a start like this in conference play. We followed the game plan very well. Overall, it’s a great day.”

Kelly Haggerty had seven points for the Buckeyes on four goals and three assists, while Maghan Beaudrault tallied five (four goals, one assist) and Rachel Hawes (2 goals, two assists) added four. Ohio State also got goals from Jayme Beard (3), Gabby Capuzzi (2) and Lauren Sterner.

The Buckeyes led 9-4 at the half; Beaudrault scored four first-half goals and Gilwee recorded 10 saves before intermission. Hopkins closed within 10-7 early in the second half before the Buckeye offense reasserted itself with five scores in a five-minute span.

Ohio State returns to action Wednesday hosting Cincinnati at 7 p.m.; admission is free.
