COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State junior right-hander Alex Wimmers was named to the 2010 Golden Spikes Award watch list, USA Baseball announced Thursday. The award is given each year to the best collegiate baseball player in the country.

The 2010 Golden Spikes Award will be presented live on Tuesday, July 13, at the 2010 Major League Baseball All-Star FanFest in Anaheim, Calif. Wimmers is one of six players on the list who finished among the 30 semifinalists for the award in 2009.

Listed as a preseason All-American by multiple outlets, Wimmers is coming off a sophomore campaign in which he received Big Ten co-Pitcher of the Year honors after posting a 9-2 record, a 3.27 earned run average and 136 strikeouts (vs. 55 walks) in 104.2 innings. He was named first-team All-America by Louisville Slugger and PING! Baseball and third-team All-America by Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA.
