Colorado Springs, Colo. – Alex Wilson, Sean Neighbarger and Trevor Howard, all three of whom were representing the Ohio State men’s gymnastics squad at the U.S. National Qualifier on Saturday evening (July 15) at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., qualified for the P&G Championships that will take place later this summer, Aug. 17-20, in Anaheim, Calif.
Wilson, who was competing for the first time in over six months, performed splendidly in his return. Competing in a field of 43 athletes, the upcoming senior notched the fifth-best scores in the field in both the rings (14.050) and vault (14.450); those two performances earned him the trip to Anaheim in August.
Neighbarger represented the Scarlet and Gray for the first time in his career and advanced to the P&G Championships with top-10 showings on the floor and vault. Neighbarger’s best finish of the night came on the floor with a score of 14.200, the fifth highest in the competition. His vault of 14.000 earned him a tie for ninth place. Neighbarger also competed on the parallel bars (13.250/15th place), rings (12.450/17th place) and high bar (11.450/21st place).
Howard, a Columbus native, racked up three top-10 finishes on the evening, including gold on the rings with a readout of 14.600. Howard followed that up with a bronze finish on the vault with a well-rounded 14.650. His routine of 12.800 on the high bar placed him in the eight position of the field. He completed the completion with 17th-place finishes on the parallel bars (13.200) and floor (13.350). Howard is a post-collegiate competitor having already used up all of his collegiate eligibility.
Eighteen athletes qualified to the 2017 P&G Championships based on the results of the National Qualification Points System. The athletes who qualified based on the Points System results are listed below by state. The complete men’s field will be announced shortly. The P&G Championships will determine the athletes that will represent the U.S. National Team at the World Championships in October.
